2 | P a g e QUESTION 3 Read through the excerpt of the case of Nomsa extracted from Coetzee, Roythorne- Jacobs & Tebele, 2021, pp 74 -75) below and answer the questions that follow. The case of Nomsa Nomsa is a 25-year-old Zulu woman who has now made a decision to make a career change from her work as a bank teller (the only role that she has occupied) to pursue a career as a professionally registered industrial psychologist. She occupied the role of bank teller for three years and reported that she did not particularly enjoy the role. After several discussions with friends and family she was advised to approach a career counsellor for further assistance. Nomsa and the counsellor have had several sessions regarding her career concerns. During the first session the career development practitioner (a qualified industrial psychologist) provided an overview of how she could be of assistance to Nomsa. The client (Nomsa) was also informed that career counselling and development guidance was a process and hence one session would not be sufficient to investigate potential avenues in terms of career guidance. Several sessions were then scheduled and the second session comprised a career diagnostics conversation to ascertain life and career preoccupations, aspirations, psychological life stage challenges/tasks and developmental career stage activities/tasks. The initial diagnostics conversation revealed that certain socio-cultural contextual factors influenced Nom sa’s career decision - making. Nomsa’s community and family include individuals mostly from Zulu and other African backgrounds. Cultural practices, such as firm prescriptions around child-rearing, responsibilities of taking care of elderly family, may result in career development paths of adults in non-western situations to stray from the conventional career development paths. The professional practitioner realised that she needed an understanding of the larger cultural context wherein the client’ s career development takes place and the unique role of the client as a woman within her socio-cultural context because these will impact the client’s decision -making. Intellectual pursuits in black African culture are customarily set aside for men. As a woman, Nomsa thus faces more obstacles in her formal career pursuits than men. South African black girls are traditionally socialised to produce and care for children and are often taught not to outdo men in schooling or in the workplace. However, despite these cultural norms, a growing number of young black African women are circumventing traditional women’s work roles and are keenly pursuing careers even in male - dominated professions, which indicates a key change in roles, matriarchal structures of the families and employment equity legislation permitting black women the social legitimacy to see themselves as equal to their male counterparts in terms of occupational progression opportunities. Hence, the practitioner thought that it may be worth noting that social and family pressures may also play a role in Nomsa placing more salience on the occupational role. Nomsa appears to be already feeling these pressures, which may have led her to seek advice from a professionally qualified career counsellor regarding her career aspirations. Reflect on Nomsa’s background as presented in the excerpt above and answer the following questions: 3.1. Identify Nomsa’s current adulthood stage and discuss the psychological tasks associated with her career life stage (see Table 5.3 in Coetzee & Schreuder, 2021) . (4)
3 | P a g e 3.2. Reflect on your own career life story and identify your current adulthood stage and describe how the psychological tasks you are experiencing are manifesting or expressing themselves. (8) 3.3. Based on the excerpt abov e it is evident that Nomsa’s career decision making was influenced by her socio-cultural background. As an aspiring career counsellor, it is imperative to be cognisant of the socio-cultural and socio-economic factors that influence an individual’s career d ecision making. Provide an overview of your socio- cultural background then reflect on how it has influenced your current career decisions and choices. (8) [20] TOTAL MARKS: 50 MARKS © UNISA 2023
