1 The impact of social psychological aspects and the effect they have on an individual’s health cannot be overlooked. The profound influence that stress usually has on a person’s health is very substantive, it affects both mental and physical health and plays a significant role in shaping the health outcomes of a person. Drawing insights from Chapter 13 of Feenstra's "Social Psychology" (2020), supplementary articles (Smith et al., 2022; Taylor, 2023), and the American Academy of Pediatrics video on achieving optimal health through the Health Realization Model, this discussion will delve into the relevance of stress, analyze situational factors affecting health, and explore how social and cultural variables contribute to stress and well-being. Stress as a social variable has played a crucial role in my health journey both mentally and physically. The demands that come with day-to-day life engagements, pressures from the work environment, and personal challenges all evoke different stress responses. Self-awareness in the identification of stressful situations is very important as one must be able to identify triggers that bring about stress in their life. One also should devise must-stress coping mechanisms and ways in which when stress is triggered they can employ such to help calm down and cope with stressful situations effectively and efficiently. The health realization model video is very insightful in highlighting the role of perception and individual agency in managing stress and underscoring its critical connection to overall health. It is also very important to reflect on situational factors and how various life stressors directly impact my health. Work-related pressures major life changes and unexpected challenges contribute to high levels of stress in my life. Feenstra’s textbook and other supplementary articles provide an in-depth analysis of the transactional nature of stress and how it resonates with personal experience, emphasizing the need to comprehend and navigate these situational stressors with ease to help achieve optimal health (Smith et al., 2022).
2 Social and cultural variables contribute significantly to the experience of stress. Cultural norms, societal expectations, and interpersonal dynamics all play a crucial role in how an individual perceives and copes with stress. Social support groups and psychiatrists have been a crucial part of my coping with stress. The two have provided a listening ear and have been part of the healing and recovery process from stressful situations and also in mitigating the effect of the stressful situation reducing its impact and hence a speedy and effective recovery. Social support networks, or the lack thereof, also play a crucial role in mitigating or exacerbating stress levels (Smith et al., 2022). Lazarus and Folkman's 1984 stress coping model, along with Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome from 1956 are extremely important for understanding the complicated relationship between stress and health effects. Lazarus and Folkman's Model about dealing with stress shows how our feelings about a problem can influence our reaction. This makes it clear that some people may see something as very hard while for others, maybe not so much (1984). On the other hand, Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome shows how our body reacts to stress. It talks about alarm, resistance, and exhaustion stages which happen when we are stressed (Selye 1956). These theories together help us to fully understand how stress works on both mental and physical levels. Recent research studies (Smith et al., 2022; Taylor, 2023) show that stress and health outcomes are related. When we pay attention to this important connection, it helps our overall wellness even more. These studies help us understand that stress and health affect each other. They show not only how stress can influence a person's health, but also how their overall state of well-being might change the way they react to things causing them tension. This double effect
3 shows how hard it is to understand stress as a social-mind issue. This makes clear that the link between feeling stressed and health isn't one-way but is changing back and forth over time. In conclusion, stress emerges as a central social psychological phenomenon influencing health outcomes. This discussion, interweaving personal experiences with insights from Feenstra's "Social Psychology" (2020) and other scholarly sources, underscores the multifaceted nature of stress and its implications for well-being. Acknowledging stress as a social variable prompts a comprehensive approach to health that considers individual perceptions, situational factors, and the broader social and cultural context. By understanding and managing stress, individuals can foster resilience and contribute to the cultivation of healthier communities.
