Currently, there are nine justices on the Supreme Court. Can you please tell me which justices
are more conservative and which ones are more liberal? Also, given the age of the current judges,
what will be the likely ideological makeup of the court by the year 2024?
The choice of Supreme Court justices as part of the United States constitutional convention.
The process has undergone significant changes, including the court system and the congressional
and presidential influence on the choice. The appointment of Supreme Court justices is often
influenced by political opinion, and the democrats have substantial impact and proposal on the
Supreme Court changes
(Schmidt et al., 235). The Conservative and liberal views have minimal
influences since the judges are chosen from ideologically balanced individuals. Presidential
elections influence judicial appointments and thus creating swings in the court ideology. Due to
political power, the liberal and conservative swing leads to ideological instability, which can
compromise the legitimacy of the court and the appointment of justices (
Chilton et al., 83). The
change in political leadership in the United States significantly affects Supreme Court justices;
for example, 2016 was vital since it led to a balance between conservative and liberal justices.
The replacement of judges through presidential appointments has shifted the ideological balance.
For example, the death of justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg brought about a transformation in the
ideological outlook in Supreme Court
(Ball et al.,152). As a liberal, her death led to a shift to
conservativeness, and the presidential appointment was a way to expand the conservative powers
in the Supreme Court.
Moreover, the concept of ideological balance has been unattainable in the United States
since the rise of the multiple proposals to reshape the Supreme Court. For example, Buttigieg’s
plan sought to expand the Supreme Court justices to 15. The project aimed to introduce liberal,
conservative, and apolitical justices into the Supreme Court. Also, the rise of a partisan plan to
introduce more justices is a case of unbalanced ideology in the Supreme Court. Changes in the
political scene, such as the Democrat win, are likely to bring about more liberal ideologies in the
Supreme Court(Ball et al.,146. The attainment of an ideological balance relies on depoliticizing
the process.
The United States judicial system is considered independent; however, the court systems
do not have complete independence since the political processes influence them. The
contribution of the political checks is a hindrance to the ideological balance
(Schmidt et al., 330).
The threat of policy overhauls explains the need for the liberal mindset in the Supreme Court.
The ideological makeup of the court by the year 2024 will be influenced by the Democratic
presidency, which will counter the previous appointments in the Supreme Court. Therefore, the
liberal justices are likely to play a crucial role in the review of judicial processes. Essentially, the
political role in the judicial system is part and parcel f the determination of the Supreme Court's
ideological balance.
