Legislation Grid Template Use this document to complete Part 1 of the Module 2 Assessment Legislation Grid and Testimony/Advocacy Statement Health-related Bill Name Protecting Our Kids Act of 2022 Bill Number H.R. 7910 Description The legislative branch of government consists of two arms collectively called congress which is involved in making laws (Congress.gov., 2022). The Protecting Our Kids Act has been proposed in response to the numerous nationwide mass shootings. School shootings are becoming too many. The shooting at Uvalde on May 24, 2022, was the 27th school shooting and the 212th mass shooting since the beginning of this year alone (Diaz, 2022). This implies that there is a need for legislation that protects the public, especially our schools, by enacting laws that prevent unlawful access to guns and making various changes to federal firearms laws, including establishing new criminal offenses for gun-related crimes (Protecting Our Kids Act, 2022). Federal or State? Federal Legislative Intent This bill intends to amend title 18 of the United States Code (Congress.gov, 2022). Sections of the bill include:  Raising the age limit for purchasing certain firearms.

 Preventing gun trafficking.  Revolutionizing the prohibition on untraceable firearms.  Encouraging the safe storage of firearms.  Establishing new federal crime offenses for gun trafficking  Reporting on the demographic data of individuals deemed ineligible to purchase firearms with the national instant criminal background check system by the Department of Justice (Protecting Our Kids Act, 2022). Proponents/ Opponents Proponents: Proponents of the bill include all democratic house members except Reps. Jared Golden of Maine, Kurt Schrader of Oregon, and five Republicans, including Reps. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Fred Upton of Michigan, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, and Chris Jacobs of New York are proponents of the bill. Opponents Opponents are mainly Republican congressmen except for the five members listed above and the two democratic members mentioned above. Target Population General public Status of the bill (Is it in hearings or committees?) The bill was introduced to the House of Representatives as a House bill (H.R. 7910) by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY-10) on May 31, 2022. The bill has 177 co-sponsors, all democratic congress members (Protecting Our Kids Act, 2022). The bill passed the house on June 8, 2022, and was introduced to the Senate on June 9, 2022. And since then, nothing has been heard about it. The bill received a heightened coverage partly due to the shooting at Uvalde, but public attention is waning due to the

current economic climate. General Notes/Comments Gun violence has become the leading cause of death among children and teens (Diaz, 2022). The Protecting Our Kids Act, if passed, will include the banning of the sale of semiautomatic firearms to individuals who are underage and subject bump stocks to federal firearms laws. The Bill will prevent importing, selling, manufacturing, transferring, and possessing large-capacity ammunition feeding devices (Protecting Our Kids Act, 2022). Overall, the Bill seeks to restrict ineligible people’s access to guns to keep the public, especially the kids, safe. There are several bills targeting gun control in the Senate, such as the Bipartisan gun safety bill that passed this week in the Senate, which further highlights the importance of enacting gun controls to keep the public safe. As agents of change, nurses are saddled with advocating for social reforms such as gun control (Milstead & short, 2019). References Congress.gov. (n.d.).
