POS FINAL The theme for the semester has been the superiority of liberal, free trade, capitalist, pluralist, democratic, republics and the inferiority of communist, fascist, mercantile--authoritarianism of every flavor. Make the argument that free countries are more prosperous and better than authoritarian countries. Use the best evidence from the class. This means you have to organize your essay before the exam which we will take in class. Possible topics can include the intricacies of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Putin, Communism, Fascism, why republics are wealthier, the dangers of concentrated power particularly in the executive branch, the rise of Xi, the importance of human rights, etc. You must write at least 3 pages in class and 6 pages if you have a medical excuse and can't take the test in class. The only criterion for the evidence is that it can't be rhetorical. It must be empirical and detailed. In other words, no bovine excrement. WRITE THE ESSAY FIRST BEFORE YOU TAKE IT IN CLASS EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN'T USE NOTES IN CLASS. Free countries are obviously more prosperous and better than authoritarian countries. America is a perfect example, after becoming a country free from Great Britain, America has prospered, currently leading in world GDP. The Declaration of Independence stated all of America’s grievances toward Great Britain and listed basic human rights that were clearly lacking from GB. America then went on to create the Constitution which became an agreement between the people and the government. The Constitution was created as the law of the land so that the people would know their role to the government and the government would know their role to the people and so the government can run smoothly. Property rights were also included in this and countries such as Russia and North Korea don’t have property rights. The Founding Fathers created the Constitution with modernization in mind so that amendments could be added and deleted, there would be little to no corruption (especially after Shay’s Rebellion), and it would last for a long
time, which it clearly has over 200 years later. Corruption is a big issue in authoritarian countries. America is individualist meaning human rights are a big factor, which is something many authoritarian countries so clearly lack. Religion is a major factor; in America there is no limit on religion but in China, people are persecuted for being a different religion. In Xinjiang specifically, the Uyghurs, which is the largest minority, are being put into camps that are called “re-education camps”. America also has a vast number of institutions and a community front that authoritarian countries also lack. Education is better in free countries than in authoritarian countries because authoritarian countries, like North Korea have government funded and mandated education to keep people from defecting from the regime. America encourages the right to petition the government (1 st amendment). Fair court systems are also something authoritarian countries lack. Americans have the constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial, so conflict is resolved much better and easier than in authoritarian countries. North Koreans try to escape Kim Jong Un’s rule every day. Majority of North Koreans live in poverty and are starved to death. The North Koreans are forced to glorify Kim Jong Un and the regime at meetings. If they don’t attend the meetings, they are punished along with their families, including very distant family members. These political prisoners are kept in prison camps where they are beaten and starved. North Korea also has a has a very low GDP. The regime keeps the people in the dark, so they think that their situation is going to get better, like they’re promised, but it only gets worse. North Koreans barely have any
basic human rights. The media is either banned or filtered and often gets smuggled in secretly. The people aren’t protected by the government whatsoever and are forced to complete unpaid labor. Russia’s also has a pretty low GDP. Putin rose to power through corruption, kleptocracy, and scapegoating. The country faced food shortages because of him, and he often stole money in a pay to play system where companies would buy items from companies that Putin owned majority of, and he would make the most profit to build vacation villas for him and his friends. Russia’s institutions are mainly owned by the government and the regime. If people went against the regime and tried to go against Putin, he would have them either arrested or killed. America is more prosperous because of our democracy. The people are accounted for and their opinions matter. In Russia and North Korea, the people’s opinions don’t matter. In the U.S. we have the electoral college and multiple elections, so the people get to choose who to put in power instead of corrupt politicians rising to power through rigged elections. AMERICA HAS PROPERTY RIGHTS AND RUSSIA AND NORTH KOREA DON” T
