1) 2) 3) 4) My unit of analysis will be each person surveyed in each World Cup qualifying country in each year. | have chosen this unit of analysis since | have established that | will be using a survey to collect and measure my data, and this is how it was suggested | label my unit of analysis for a survey. | might include a study on the Olympics as well, and if | did the unit of analysis for that would be each person surveyed in each Olympic Games participating country in each year. My scope will be each World Cup qualifying country in each year since 1930. The year 1930 was chosen because that was when the World Cup was founded. | was afraid this would be a little too old for a good indication on modern comparative politics, but this could also provide information on how sports affected aggression during WW2. However, | might have to put an asterisk on the pre-WW2 world cups because they were not as influential as later World Cups due to a lack of international travel and boycotts. A scope for the Olympic study should be each Olympic Games participating country since 1896. My dependent variables will be nationalism and war support. For the case of this study, nationalism will be defined as how closely one identifies with their home country. | am using the term “home country” instead of birth country in order to focus on what country a person has been raised in, because if | used the term birth country it could skew results since someone might have been born in one country and raised in another, so they wouldn’t have any reason at all to identify closely with their birth country. My second DV will be defined as an individual’s positive or negative outlook towards any political armed conflict. My independent variable will be international organized sports fan activity, which | will define as any positive or negative attitude towards a person’s home country’s sports team. There is a chance that if | decide to include an Olympic study, | would have to separate this IV into one about the World Cup and one about the Olympics. | want to collect data on the Olympics, | am just unsure as to whether or not that data will be different enough data from the World Cup to be worth it, as well as that | feel like If | were to do such a thing it becomes less of a “Sports compared to national aggression” study and more of a “which affects national Aggression more, the World Cup or the Olympics?”
