1. What is your research question? Clearly state your research question in a single sentence. Then, briefly explain why it is an important question. I have chosen “Does organized sports have a significant relationship with a group’s nationalistic attitudes towards war?” as my research question. This is an important question due to the fact that the answer to this question can indicate whether sports has played a role in diminishing or increasing aggressive nationalist-motivated militarism since WW2. Using this information, we could potentially understand and clarify the causes behind war and even explain why some countries and regions are more prone towards war with one another. Should the results be clairvoyant enough, such information could help predict future conflicts. 2. What is your dependent variable? Be as clear and specific as possible. I have chosen a group’s nationalist attitude towards war as a dependent variable. I chose this variable because I want to examine whether or not sports affect a population’s desire for war, and I want to make sure such a desire is motivated by nationalism. This is because international sports teams would affect nationalist-motivated war more than war encouraged by religion, and therefore be easier to measure. I specified group instead of nation because I also want to examine how different sports can affect certain regions within nations since many sports teams aren’t international and instead center around a city/region. 3. What is your independent variable? Be as clear and specific as possible. If you have more than one independent variable, explain why. My independent variable is “organized sports” and I have left it somewhat vague intentionally because I want to leave room to examine both international sports teams and regional sports teams since they could have differing effects. When I refer to organized sports I don’t necessarily mean numerous groups of small quantities of people playing sports on their own in a gym from
within a larger group, I am instead referring to large scale events like the World Cup or Super Bowl, where large, more organized groups of people unite behind a common goal to see their team win. 4. What is your hypothesis? Your answer should include 1) a dependent variable, 2) one (or more) independent variable, and 3) a claim about the direction of the effect of your IV on your DV. Phrase this concisely in one or two sentences. Then provide 4) an explanation of the logic, i.e., why you think this proposition is plausible. This explanation should be a concise paragraph. Increased organized sports activity has a diminishing effect on a group’s nationalistic preference towards war. Such an effect is plausible because sports, especially international sports, can serve as an outlet for pent up nationalistic fervor and militarism that is instilled throughout a group(especially men) via national pride and tradition. This outlet allows for groups to release this aggression which in doing so “calms” them and makes a group more averse to war. However, I also plan to examine whether the opposite effect is true, and if my research shows that organized sports increases nationalistic and militaristic aggression, I will then examine that relationship.
