CH S 260 Online Article II 1. What is the biggest problem with the Electoral College? The popular vote winner has lost at least four, and maybe five times, in presidential elections decided by the electoral college. 2) What does Article II focus on almost exclusively? The President shall be removed from office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, __________, _________, or other _________ _______ and ____________. The duties and obligations of a president are largely the subject of Article II. On conviction of treason, bribery, or other serious crimes and misdemeanors, the President will be impeached and removed from office. 3) How often must the President give information to the Congress on the State of the Union? A State of the Union address must be delivered by the President. There isn't a Congressional Check. Annual address given by the president in late January or early February to Congress as required by the constitution to do so. 4) Why does Congressman John Lewis believe your vote does not count in presidential elections? John Lewis thinks that because there are so many problems with the voting process, our vote doesn't really matter. Your ballot won't count if it has a butterfly on it, the military failed to postmark it, is dimpled, hanged, or has a pregnant chad on it. Your vote will only be taken into consideration if the method of counting votes is changed. 5) Under what circumstances could a person have been elected or served as President of the United States but was not a native American? It is debatable whether a kid born overseas of American citizens, who is classified as a natural-born citizen under federal law, would also be eligible to serve as president under the Constitution. 6) Can a President be sued while serving Office? If so, for what? According to the court's decision in the case of Clinton v. Jones, the president can be held liable for personal decisions made while in office.
7) What did Alexander Hamilton think with regard to “term of office,” for the President of the United States? What did George Washington believe? How many terms can a president serve in office? Which President served the most terms ? If a president was permitted to be elected for seven to twenty years, Alexander Hamilton believed that the leader would turn into a "monster." The custom of limiting periods to two was established by George Washington. Currently, a president can serve two complete terms or ten years if they are taking over for an unfinished term. Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as president for the most terms; he passed away in the middle of his fourth term. 8) In 1973, Congress passed the War Powers Resolution. What is its significance? The War Powers Resolution is a statute that restricts the president's ability to send combat forces out of the country for more than 60 days without congressional authorization. It is important since it was created during American engagement in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and is viewed as unconstitutional by many presidents. The president is still allowed to deploy combat forces on short notice, despite the statute. 9) Define: Advice and Consent as it relates to the U.S. Senate and the President. The Senate has the constitutional authority to ratify treaties and presidential appointments through advice and consent. 10) Define: Impeachment A civil American officer can be accused of malfeasance through the process of impeachment. The Senate is tasked with conducting the trial and removing those found guilty from office. The House of Representatives has the sole authority to impeach. 11) Define: President’s Cabinet The heads of the executive departments typically make up the president's cabinet, which is their chosen group of advisors.
