lecture creating a new govt The first attempt at a national gov’t is an article of confederation It created a very weak national govt There is no executive branch at all Ratify treaties admit new states So we can declare war and peace. It can establish alliances with other nations The confederation Could not regulate interstate commerce or tax citizens Late 1770 and early 1780 distrust of centralized power This system is created while the war with Britain is still going on. The war with Britain end in 1783. In the 18th century we did not have a very well regulated financial system After the revolutionary war Britain closed it’s Caribbean colonies to U.S Mid 1780 farmer will lose their land because they don’t have hard money to pay off their debt. Shays rebellion breaks out in 1786 Angry farmers. Merchants and govt don’t like this Concentrated in Massachusetts. Shays rebellion is surpassed By 1786 a growing number of Americans are realizing that they need a stronger national govt 1787 new constitution Congress would have more power Bicameral Legislation
This was the compromise The 2 chambers There is a lower chamber the house of representatives. It’s members are based on population There is a upper chamber the senate all states are represented equally. Every state have 2 senators, Northern did not want the salves to be counted but the southern did The new constitution said the compromise was that for 20 years the slave trade will continue. 1789 washington was elected president Constitution is the oldest written operative constitution in the world Founder opposed factions In the late 18 century we have political parties 1719 whiskey rebellion First major internal rebellion that U.S. faced under the new constitution A large army was sent to put down this rebellion Jay’s treaty was negotiated in the mid 1790s In 1789 french revolution In the min 1790s pretty much in 1796 we have emergence of political parties 1796 alexander federalist party 1796 presidential election In 1796 we have the election of john adams as president The vice president is jefferson in 1796
In 1798 sedition act In 1800 we have another presidential election in 1800 jefferson is president Jefferson election is impt because this is the first time we have a peaceful transfer of power
