Unit 1 Test

Quiz Instructions
The following test covers all course material so far in this course (reading, discussions, and any other
material posted on Canvas). There is one short answer question (about two to three paragraphs, but I
put suggested lengths in each option), and objective multiple choice questions from readings.
You only have one attempt. The test is timed, but open book. You will receive more time if you have a
reasonable accommodation. Please do not use quotes or copy and paste the textbook. I am primarily
grading on whether you clearly understand the concepts. Do not shy away from using your own words
(paraphrase the material).

Question 1
Pick ONE of the following two questions to answer. Clearly indicate which prompt you
decided to answer.
Option 1
Checks and balances, federalism, and separation of powers are three important
features built into the US Constitution by our founders. A family relative asks you what
the difference between checks and balances, federalism, and separation of powers
is. Explain to your relative, in your own words, what each one is and how they differ.
I am looking for roughly two paragraphs with 6-10 sentences each, but make sure
you it is long enough to address all parts of the question.
Option 2
The progressives were enormously influential on California politics. What were their
views on immigration? Give a group that they targeted and an example of how they
were targeted. Why was that group targeted in California?
Do not respond with an answer like "they were racist." I am looking for an explanation
that shows you understand what was happening at that time in California. This
question is about the progressive era in California, not at the national level, so the
answer to this can be found in Governing California.
I am looking for roughly two paragraphs with 6-10 sentences each, but make sure
you it is long enough to address all parts of the question.

Checks and balances, federalism, and the separa±on of powers are three
completely different concepts. Federalism is the poli±cal movement that
supports more centralized power in the government. The Federalist party is
largely considered the past equivalent of the modern Democra±c party. The
separa±on of powers is, well, the separa±on of powers in the government. The
U.S. has three branches -- legisla±ve, judicial, and execu±ve. Each of these
branches have their own powers and du±es that they do for the country -- one
is in charge of passing bills/laws, one is in charge of confirma±on and chief
commander in war, the other sets the precedents for other branches and law.
Checks and balances are a system prac±ced in the U.S. to this day. This system
was created in order to make sure that none of the three branches got too
much power By this system all three branches keep each other in check The
