1 An Analysis of Political Platforms Chancey M. Hall Helms School of Government, Liberty University GOVT200_B04: Constitutional Government and Free Enterprise Professor Darryll Dowell September 18, 2023
2 Introduction In a vast overview of the political parties of the United States government, that consist of the Democratic party as well as the Republican party. By taking a short view of both parties' core fundamental beliefs in which they operate under, it is observed that not one but both parties have in many ways overstepped in regards to biblical principles. Background In the 1790’s and early 1800 a decision was made that would eternally change American politics and society as it was known. This decision being that American senators decided to divide into rival parties on the basis of opposition to the policies of George Washington and John Adams ( U.S. Senate: About Parties and Leadership|Historical Overview , n.d.). While at the time of this occurrence the parties labels were fluid and had not yet been implemented through the senate and congress it did cause a great divide. Fast forwarding 200 hundred years, the political divide is ever more prevalent in society. What was once once known as the Democratic Republicans is simply known now as Republicans ( U.S. Senate: About Parties and Leadership | Historical Overview , n.d.). In concurrence, what was known as the The Federalist then would be known as the Democratic party in today’s society ( U.S. Senate: About Parties and Leadership | Historical Overview , n.d.). Taking an overview of today’s Republican party, it is important to recognize the views and goals of the platform. According to the Republican National Committee, “ Republicans believe in liberty, economic prosperity, preserving American values and traditions, and restoring the American dream for every citizen of this great nation. As a party, we support policies that seek to achieve those goals” ( later insert source.) In contrast, it is also just as important to recognize the views and goals of the Democratic platform. According to the Democratic National
3 Committee, As Democrats, “we believe that every person in this nation should be treated with dignity and respect. We believe that health care is a right for all and that we should be rewarding the hard work of middle class families. We believe that our schools and streets should be free from gun violence and that a woman’s decisions about her own body are hers to make” ( About the Democratic Party - Democrats , 2023). As one may observe, the basis of the desired goal of the two parties are exceedling similar; to create a better America. While the goal of the two parties may be similar it is without effort to observe the beliefs to be greatly dissimilar. Overstepping In observing the beliefs of the Democratic committee at a quick glance one may be under the impression their beliefs and/or goals fall under biblical principles, this until the very last statement that quotes “ a woman’s decisions about her own body are hers to make” ( About the Democratic Party - Democrats , 2023). A deeper dive into the Democratic Committee’s website will show that this state is regarding the topic and issue of abortion, as stated in their health care beliefs, “We believe unequivocally, like the majority of Americans, that every woman should be able to access high-quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion” ( ACHIEVING UNIVERSAL, AFFORDABLE, QUALITY HEALTH CARE - Democrats , 2023). This idea clearly oversteps the biblical principle that all life is valuable and belongs to God. As well as the commandment given in the book of Exodus, “Do not murder” ( Bible Gateway passage: Exodus 20:13 - Christian Standard Bible , 2017). As in regards to the Republican National Committee, a way they have overstepped biblical principles would be their views on the death penalty. In a 2015 poll conducted by the Pew Resource Center, 77% of Republicans were in favor of the death penalty ( Political Affiliation and the Death Penalty , 2016). As also stated on the GOP’s website in their

4 Republican Platform of 2016, which states their beliefs as well as goals. It is stated that “The constitutionality of the death penalty is firmly settled by its explicit mention in the Fifth Amendment” ( Republican National Committee 2016). This belief opposes the fundamental biblical principles that are to be held by those who follow and confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Conclusion As it has been observed and conveyed with proper evidence to support its claims, both the Democratic and Republican party platforms have overstepped in regards to biblical principles.
