1 Week 4: Writing Assignment Alonzo Chavez California Baptist University POL 213: American Government Dr. Linda-Marie Sundstrom February 4, 2024
2 Week 4: Writing Assignment Media Influence on Elections Druckman, J. N. (2005). Media matter: How newspapers and television news cover campaigns and influence voters. Political Communication , 22(4), 463–481. https://doi.org/10.1080/10584600500311394 The author’s main point was that the media has less of an effect on elections and voting decisions than many would think. The author did not offer any pros or cons. The overall conclusion from the research done is that the media outlet that seems to have the highest impact on informing or swaying voters’ opinions is the newspaper, compared to television. (This article was from 2005 so I would be willing to bet this would not be the case today with the emergence of social media.) Garrett, R. K. (2019). Social Media’s contribution to political misperceptions in U.S. presidential elections. PLOS ONE , 14(3). https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0213500 The author’s main point is that is a big cause for concern regarding social media’s role in promoting misperceptions (or fake news/misinformation) during political campaigns. The author did not provide any pros but did mention the cons of misperceptions brought upon by social media include political polarization, distrust in the candidates and the government, amongst others. They concluded that even though misinformation on social media is bad, there are other, important sources of misinformation that we also need to worry about. Political Party Impact on Federal Elections Herrnson, P. S. (1986). Do parties make a difference? the role of party organizations in Congressional elections. The Journal of Politics , 48(3), 589–615.
3 https://doi.org/10.2307/2131169 The main point of the article is that despite concerns about the decline of political parties, there is evidence suggesting a resurgence in at least one aspect of political parties - the party organization. The most interesting point I felt was made by the author is that national party committees, specifically congressional campaign committees, are actively providing valuable assistance to candidates in areas such as campaign advertising, issue development, and fundraising, which contradicts the notion of an overall decline in political party influence. One thing they said that might not be common knowledge is the specific roles that national party committees play in supporting candidates. These committees are aiding candidates in activities requiring technical expertise, in-depth research, or connections with the Washington campaign community. Levitt, S. D., & Snyder, J. M. (1995). Political parties and the distribution of Federal Outlays. American Journal of Political Science , 39(4), 958. https://doi.org/10.2307/2111665 The main point of the article is that several models of distributive politics suggest a role for political parties in influencing the allocation of federal outlays through elections. The most interesting point was that the study suggests that parties can influence the distribution over time by targeting types of voters, but they face challenges when trying to precisely target specific districts. This adds complexity to the understanding of how parties impact the allocation of federal resources during elections. Political Party Impacts on Local Elections Benjamin, A., & Miller, A. (2017). Picking winners: How political organizations influence local elections. Urban Affairs Review , 55(3), 643–674. https://doi.org/10.1177/1078087417732647

4 The main point of the article is to explore the significance of endorsements in the context of local elections. As far as I am aware, the author did not offer any pros/cons of political party influences at the local level. The article highlights the significance of endorsements from various sources such as civic organizations, elected officials, and newspapers. These endorsements are portrayed as factors that influence voter behavior and choices in local elections. Warshaw, C. (2019). Local elections and representation in the United States. Annual Review of Political Science , 22(1), 461–479. https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev-polisci-050317 071108 The main point of the article is to highlight the increased attention and progress in the study of representation and elections in local politics in recent years. The findings from recent research indicate that, in the modern polarized era, local politics closely resembles other areas of American politics. The author does not seem to offer any pros/cons of political party influences at the local level. The article does not explicitly mention other influences at the local level aside from political parties. The primary focus is on the impact of partisanship and ideology in shaping local politics.
