Business Ethics Beyond Dilemmas
Summary
‘Business Ethics Beyond Dilemmas’ is about business ethics and a model for moral
analysis. There are three main theories which are deontologism, moral principles and norms;
utilitarianism, the human goods at stake; Virtue ethics, the education of character for the good
life. This model takes a first-person perspective rather than a third-person perspective. It goes
into depth about each theory and in a way almost feels like philosophy. To add on, it covers more
general knowledge of ethics like the psychological, sociological, and normative levels of ethics.
Graphs and models are included to deepen understanding of business ethics. Lastly, it ends off
talking about dilemmas that have a past and when you decide on them, there are dilemmas in the
future that will arise based on prior assessments. There is bound to be a positive and negative
aspect to any choice made. Even if the best decision is made, future dilemmas will inevitably
arise.
Analysis
The part that interested me the most is about the formal rule. The formal rule groups the
‘type’ of norms. It is designed to limit liabilities and draw clear lines to avoid conflict. It helps us
uncover what is right or wrong and how we should act. It is broken up to three categories: Social
(socio-cultural and law), Organizational (Formal and informal), and Personal( aspirational and
effective). There are also norms of different levels and are grouped into 4 sections: Rules,
Principles, Particular, and Universal. It is interesting to see how this format breaks down norms
into hard-cut sections to make it easier to decide. The notes mention this can be applied in a
company such as a code of conduct or preestablished procedures. However, it is not enough to
determine the moral relevance of every action. This format should be used carefully as it may not
result in the best decision that can be made.
Questions
1.
Is there ever a case where a dilemma’s future won’t have negative consequences? Are
there strategies for minimizing negative consequences and promoting ethical consistency
over time?
2.
Are there specific cases where the formal rule has been effectively applied in resolving
complex ethical dilemmas in business? Are there instances where it may be insufficient
or led to unintended consequences?
3.
Are there times when using a third-person perspective is better than first person?
