FINAL EXAMINATION
CRJ 102: Crime and Punishment
Fall 2021
Instructions
Read each question carefully first, THINK about what you want or have to say, and then begin writing.
This is an
essay examination and thus requires articulation of the *way* you answer as well as what you answer will be the
basis of each assessment.
Insight, foundational information, and analysis should be critical components in each
response.
A total of three (3) answers is required.
Each response will contribute 33.3% to the total score.
Extra
credit will NOT be awarded for answering more than three questions.
Be clear, reasonable, and profound, or at least
pretend to be.
It has been a real slice of heaven.
Be sure to say “WHATUP” (so long as you don’t simply say
‘Okada’) when/if you see me in our future.
Happy end-of-the-year holiday seasons greetings.
Don’t get arrested.
Answer any 3 (three) of the following
:
1.
It was suggested that state punishment is a legislated, albeit sterilized form of revenge. Revenge is psychically
necessary and seeking to achieve it may even be beneficial.
In order to civilize the process, various
rationales/tenets justify the punishment methodologies employed.
Identify and discuss the notion that emotion
(revenge) not reason (justification) explains how the punishment administered in a state of laws justifies the
largest prison population with the longest sentences in the developed world.
Data are not necessary, criticism,
and insights are.
Discuss.
2.
The most significant issue framing the practice of criminal justice is the state’s use of execution (killing) of our
fellow citizens.
Whether or not you (we) endorse the death penalty, its fairness, justness, or reasonableness is
heated and emotional.
Reduce the emotion but turn up the heat.
Offer a discussion as to why you either favor or
revile (are against) the use of capital punishment as a responsible punishment.
Passion is allowable, ranting is
not.
Take a stand.
Make an argument either for or against its use.
Be clear.
Discuss.
3.
The myriad components that make up society (neighborhoods, peers, education, culture, the economy,
employment, etc) have been identified as relating to crime commission.
Various ‘named’ theories have been
constructed in response to these considerations as they affect those who experience these conditions.
Select one
of these named theories and offer a supporting argument as to why it is the most reasonable explanation for why
some engage in crime.
Describe and discuss the basic parameters/elements of the theory, support your argument.
4.
A vision of the reality of criminal justice was presented in “The Farm: Life inside Angola Prison.”
In spite of
geography and era, even those most critical/cynical of any one of the protagonists highlighted in this production
might conclude that much about their treatment was anachronistic, arbitrary, and unjust.
Accepting that what
was depicted was accurate / valid, use both reason and passion to describe and discuss what you saw and what
you
believe.
Examples from the film are expected.
5.
In a state of laws, legal responses to crime conviction are ascribed through articulated rationales for inflicting
punishment.
Identify these rationales and what they are, but select any one
as the justification you believe to be
the most judicious/reasonable discussing why this is your favored response.
Given the criminal justice process’s
double-headed goals of protection of public safety and equitable responses to crime, why do we punish criminals
the way we do?
What is the goal of punishment?
Discuss.
