DISCUSSION FORUM 1 Module 1: Discussion Forum Group Activity Departament of Education, Ana G. Mendez University EDUC 715: Social, Cultural and Political Dimensions Of Educational Organizations Dr. Zoraida Santiago May 17 th , 2022
DISCUSSION FORUM 2 Why do you consider multicultural education important? The student must support their opinion with a theory related to the topic. I consider multicultural education to be important because it prepares students to face the social and work challenges in general. When a student develops multi cultural social skills, it enables him or her to successfully navigate and face the challenges of the environment. Moreover, there is a process of growth in each individual in which we develop tolerance towards diversity, flexibility to listen different languages, and knowledge about the contributions each member of society can make from his/her own cultural background and life experiences. Multicultural education is an educational reform that aims to a re-organization of the school institution with the purpose of providing equal access to learning to all students. An inclusive school reinforce the concepts representative of diversity, such as diversity in gender, social class, race, etc. James Banks' model of multicultural education coincided with Vygotsky's sociocultural theory. Banks (2007) established that the process of social interaction is dynamic; student learns social values and expectations (p. 120). Bank’s theory relates with the theories presented by Dewey and Vygotsky, which explained that culture is constantly evolving as a product of the sociocultural interaction . Banks adopted these fundamentals in establishing the character dynamics of the construction of knowledge in school. Banks (2007) also agrees with Vygotsky's sociocultural learning theory, arguing that the 21st century curriculum must teach that "knowledge, having a cultural base, is changing" (p. 15).
