Section Day/Time
Assignment #1: Origins of Agriculture
Due Friday Feb. 4th at 11:59 PM on Canvas
Do you believe the beginnings of agriculture in the ancient Near East were a matter of necessity,
choice, or accident?
What evidence leads you to this interpretation?
Instructions
: To answer these questions, you should consult
only
your lecture notes, assigned
class readings, and the short 7-page book section placed within the assignment “Explaining the
Origins of Agriculture” and “Wheat, Barley, Pigs, Goats, and Sheep”, from T. Douglas Price and
Gary M. Feinman, 2010, Images of the Past
, 6
th
edition, Boston: McGraw Hill.
Formatting
: No title page (or title) is necessary. Please use the single-spaced header at the top of
this page, filling in your name, and section day/time. Your response should be approximately
500-600 words
total (roughly two pages), typed using 12 point font, double spaced, with 1”
margins. Please number pages at the bottom of the page and make sure the file name has your
first and last name.
Please submit in MS Word format (.doc or .docx) only
.
Bibliography and Citation
: You do not
need to include a bibliography, however we do expect you
to cite your sources when/if you use a quote, paraphrase an idea, or refer to a piece of evidence
that is discussed in lecture or the readings. For the reading material, use (Price and Feinman
2010:211 or relevant page number). Use (Lecture, January 23) or (Section, January 28) for
material you learned in lecture or section.
Plagiarism or any other form of academic
dishonesty earns a failing grade for the course.
See syllabus for information on plagiarism and
citation.
Late Policy
: Please refer to the syllabus for the late policy associated with assignments and
papers. Each day after the due date will decrease your grade by 3%.
Due Date
:
An electronic copy should be submitted on Canvas before midnight on Friday,
Feb 4th
by the assignment deadline. *****Emailed assignments will NOT be accepted.
Grading
: As there is no right answer, this assignment will be graded on how well you make your
argument, internal consistency, your use of evidence, and formatting guidelines. You could take
two approaches: 1) show that your interpretation is consistent with available data and/or 2) refute
other interpretations by showing that they are contradicted by the available data. Be especially
wary about making an argument based on assumptions about human nature or statements that are
vague and overly generalized: these are very easy to disprove!
More than anything, make sure
that you make an explicit argument. Do not assume the data will speak for themselves (they
rarely do!) and we can’t read between the lines to guess what you are
trying
to say – please just
say it! Look over the grading rubric, and if you have any questions, please email one of us.
