The criminal justice system is not just something that is for adults but also is
available to juveniles when they find themselves going against the law. In
today's world, children find themselves trying more and more to be like
adults and some things that a 12 year might not have done 20-30 years ago,
they find themselves trying to do to be perceived as older. The juvenile
justice system is unique because it must be present to provide the discipline
and necessary imprisonment if required, but it has to also put a strong
emphasis on rehabilitation. The hope is that since the kids in this system are
still young, there is time to rehabilitate them and alter their behaviors to help
return them to society to be contributions and not future additions to the
prison population. "The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of
1974, Public Law established the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention (OJJDP) to support local and state efforts to prevent delinquency
and improve juvenile justice systems" (Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention, 2018, para. 1). The OJJDP directly works to help
ensure that juvenile justice is fair and equal at the state and local level and
they provide financial support to these programs to ensure they are
maximizing the potential of returning juvenile delinquency and children
struggling to stay out of crime. Children are one of the most vulnerable
people in society and ensuring they are given the resources to succeed both
when they are already succeeding and when they are struggling is incredibly
important. The children are the next generation and without providing
assistance to them when they find themselves against the law, society will
never be able to change the status quo of America's incarceration rates.
"Research indicates that juvenile delinquency, if not intervened earlier, could
potentially lead to the youth’s future involvement with the criminal justice
system as an adult" (Menon & Cheung, 2018, p.459). The juvenile justice
programs teach children about the dangers of becoming tied up in the
criminal justice system, the lack of options that following a life of crime
provides, and the negative impact that living a life of crime can have on
someone's loved ones too. Jesus taught the children were some of the most
important people and that they should be protected and taught to follow
Him. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not
depart from it" (RSVCE, 1965, Prov 22:6).
