Addressing Ethical Issues Nagesca Joseph Walden University SOCW 6456 August 13, 2023
Identification of Chosen Case Study and Description of the Ethical Issue(s) Presented in the Case Study: Case Study: # 1 Even though his parents were immigrants, 16-year-old Sujay had been born and raised in the United States. The parents only consented to use the services because their children urged them to do so after the family received the recommendation for therapy. Sujay finds it challenging to decide on the type of school he plans to go to. Sujay's parents insist that he enter an engineering program to work in a field related to his ethnic class. Sujay, on the contrary, desires to go to art school and believes an individual deserves to be able to choose for himself but still wants to satisfy his parents. Sujay grew up and was born in the USA. He also claims that his parents are putting their "norms," which he claims are different from his own, on him, suggesting that he aligns with the American "way of life." The desire for children to emulate their parents is natural in any society, particularly in terms of rank, wealth, and schooling. Knowing the parents' cultural upbringing is also necessary to gauge the impact of their "mindset" on their children. Social workers must thoroughly grasp their clients' cultures and be skilled at delivering services sensitive to their clients' cultures and the differences between individuals and ethnic groups. (NASW, 2021). An objective viewpoint and a non-biased approach would be essential for any social professional collaborating with this family. Thus, understanding Indian culture and traditions and considering Sujay’s aspirations is necessary to develop an effective family therapy plan. Explanation of How I Would Address Each of These Issues:
Utilizing a combination of private, couple, and family therapy will improve understanding of the family's particular needs. This family has some exhibiting concerns since Sujay should be allowed to determine his "identity.” However, in a professional setting, it is always essential to ensure that no cultural or socioeconomic factors are ignored or overlooked. Psychologists should also promote ethical dialogue in which individuals' relational responsiveness leads to understanding the world from someone else’s perspective (Shaw, 2015). As a professional in social work who might not be thoroughly knowledgeable about the cultural context, one should "get understanding on and strive to properly understand the reasons of inequality and social diversity about race, ethnicity, natural origin, etc." (NASW, 2021). The process of engagement will be extremely challenging since it is necessary to build rapport and gain the entire family's trust. However, the parents' visible hostility to services will render that tough. The impact of external events on families, couples, or both was the topic of this course's sixth week. It will be helpful for the social worker assigned to this family to know if Sujay is the only child living there. Changes in life stages usually affect marriages. In this particular instance, the parents may wish to be involved with making decisions as a coping technique for their son's aging and anxiety surrounding "failure." Parents with children attending college go through the difficult transition of becoming "empty nesters." Despite knowing the outcomes of the programs they stated, Sujay's parents might not be aware of the benefits of attending art school. The social worker should utilize a strengths-based technique to assess the reasoning behind Sujay's choice of enrolling in school and support the suggestion for individual treatment. The case study claims that Sujay is currently feeling pessimistic about his enthusiasm due to the reactions he has gotten from his family and friends. With the help of the strengths-based approach, the client's feeling of

helplessness will be alleviated, allowing him to succeed in accomplishing his desired career objectives and maintain solid connections with his family and friends.
