Week 7 Discussion Post Respond to this forum of teacher efficacy and motivation 1. What are two ways that teacher leaders can improve the individual and/or collective efficacy of teachers at their schools? Why is this a good idea?  One way that teacher leaders can improve the individual and collective efficacy of teachers at their school is by building a positive collaborative climate where everyone feels supported and knows that they working together, as a team, for the common goal of student success. A positive collaborative culture builds trust, teamwork, belief in oneself and the unit, and determination to achieve the shared vision and/or goal. Another way is for teacher leaders to show encouragement by offering support and guidance to new teachers and/or their team members and by giving positive and constructive feedback. This will inspire continued and future success among teachers because of that constant reassurance and support from the teacher leaders. 2. How can the findings from the Ted Talk on motivation be applied in school settings? What are the implications for teacher leaders?  In a school setting it is the school leaders that can help encourage motivation among the teachers in the school and it is also each teacher’s personal intrinsic motivation. Teachers become teachers because of their love of children and education and by constantly striving for the success of their students in the classroom it becomes a huge intrinsic motivator for teachers. We all know that it is not the extrinsic motivation of that HUGE paycheck that motivates teachers, but their love of what they are doing everyday to promote student success in the classroom and that child’s success in the future. It is important for school leaders and teacher leaders to encourage the intrinsic motivation in their teachers to ensure that the goal the teacher is working toward is because it is authentic goal (intrinsic) and not material goal (extrinsic). This means they are intrinsically motivated and their reason for hard work is because it is what they truly believe in (autonomy), what they want to improve on (mastery), and because they
appreciate that they are responsible for preparing these students for the future. When teacher leaders positively encourage teachers to continue working hard, give the proper support, and work to perfect their practice this will create a collaborative culture with a common goal of intrinsic motivation and promote student success. When motivation is given correctly it releases an inspiration and drive to work toward a goal because reaching that goal means personal success and satisfaction, not just an external reward or recognition.
