Threshold concept discussion board (2)
Curriculum is more than standards, textbooks, or courses of study
My initial thoughts about the threshold concept: Curriculum is more than standards, textbooks, or courses of study is exactly what is stated. Curriculum is more than just textbooks, more than just standards, and more than just courses of study. I think it is good that teachers use these things to help guide their curriculum, but I don’t think teachers should rely on them to guide their teaching. This concept made me think back to our first threshold concept. The article stated that textbook adoption companies write what their clients (state board of education) tell them to write, leading me to believe that just because something is written in a textbook doesn’t always mean it’s the truth, it could even be just partially true. Teachers should use textbooks, standards, or courses of study to get ideas for their curriculum but not rely on these entirely. In the article “Don’t be fooled: textbooks are not your curriculum” talks about how teachers should not use textbooks to replace their curriculum. It is important to understand the difference between textbooks and curriculum. Curriculum allows students to practice skills in the ways that work best for their needs and preferences. It allows teachers to uniquely shape how their class engages with learning content and gives them the flexibility to adjust their course if their goals are not being meet. This gives teachers the opportunities to ask questions, provide additional resources and guide students to the right path. Whereas textbooks encourage one way of learning and repeatedly delivers the same material to every student. They offer no guidance when students get stuck or have a lack of understanding. Also, they provide a single perspective of its subject and is often presented as “truthful” through its authority. While curriculum allows students to explore other competing viewpoints. Textbooks and other classroom materials must follow the curriculum, rather than define what the curriculum looks like. After reading the article my thinking really didn’t change. I still have the same thoughts for the concept that I had before I read the article. The article made me realize that textbooks are a good source but should not be used as your curriculum. Therefore, curriculum is more than just textbooks, more than just standards and more than just a course of study. Bibliography
