GCU's Statement on the Integration of Faith, Learning, and Work, how does a Christian worldview support equitable education for ELLs? If a school or school district were failing to follow the federal guidelines ensuring an equitable education for ELLs, how could a teacher with a Christian worldview perspective wisely handle the situation in a way that demonstrates sensitivity and grace, while carrying out justice for the common good? “Between 1997-1998 and 2008-2009, the number of ELLs in the U.S. public schools increased by 51%, but the general population only grew by 7%. ELLS are the fastest-growing student population with approximately six million currently enrolled in public schools (Alrubail, 2016).” This is my second school I have gone to that has a faith-based education. These are the schools I seek out as I feel like they are the most welcoming and helps me build on my own faith, especially as an educator. When reviewing GCU’s Statement on the Integration of Faith, Learning, and Work, anyone who has faith will carry that over into their teaching strategies and classroom, even when not thinking about it. “We are convinced that this call extends to the workplace and that our respective vocations represent vital opportunities to glorify God by serving others in ways that promote human flourishing (University, 2023).” This statement really stuck out to me as I believe the same happens. When it comes to ELL, to me, it’s not any different then a regular classroom, or SPED classroom. All children deserve an education, no matter the race, the background, or their language. It is our job as educator to fight and advocate for our students on a daily bases. It’s our job as educators to ensure we know the laws and policies behind ELL education to ensure our students are getting their educational needs met, and when they are not, its our job as an educator to advocate for them. This goes into the second questions being asked, if a school or school district were failing to follow the federal guidelines ensuring an equitable education for ELLS, how could a teacher with a Christian worldview perspective wisely handle the situation in a way that demonstrates sensitivity and grace, while carrying out justice for the common good, and this goes along with what I have already stated, we have to advocate for our students, all of them. As a Christian, giving grace is something I follow on a daily basis, I asked for grace and I give my students and my co-workers the same. We all come from different home situations and we don’t know what might of happen the night before or that morning before school, we also have to provide grace when students are struggling as well. The same goes for students who are not receiving all the educational assistance they need. As a Christian we have to come at the situation with grace and calmness. For me, I would come at it in this aspect, I would have all my facts ready to go, I would make a list of all the policies that are in place for not only the state but that the district has in place, I would bring those to the attention of the administration first, then if need be, to the district themselves. I would also have a conversation with the parents to ensure they know what services their student(s) should be receiving and bring them into the loop as well. Things happen, things slip through the cracks, but we as educators have to be there daily to help our students and to advocate for them. We have to ensure that students are receiving all the services they are entitled to as well as their needs being meet. Thank you, References Alrubail, R. (2016, July 7).
