Process Philosophy and Marriage and Family Shannon Leveille GOV-200 July 21, 2022
Process philosophy refers to a prevailing ideology and perception which is presented by scholar of philosophy explaining a particular event in the society. Philosophers who advocate process philosophy hold that all aspects of reality are subject to change and that no level of reality is inert. There are many process philosophy facades that have generated a great effect in the government of the United States, and its society in general. The topic I chose is family and marriage and how the U.S Government has influenced it over time. The American mainstream culture is constantly changing on what is the normal and socially acceptable family. The family structure often times will adapt to the cultural ideologies, economy, and the laws developed to strengthen that adaption. It is evident that changes will continue to happen throughout our lives. However, our God has given us free will and therefore, these choices are ours to make. Process philosophy contends that God is non-existent and changes are to be expected, but with that means there is no limits to what is acceptable when it comes to marriage then. Which is probably why divorces rates are significantly rising and have increased by at least fifty percent and the “broken” family is more common than ever before. By removing God from any aspect of our lives, marriages, and our families, everything will start becoming dysfunctional. Yet it seems that our society is making it so that the idea of God being non-existent and the desire to remove him from our lives is becoming more common and it is being accepted more and more. Without God there is no guidance, no law or structure in which to live by, and the concept of the true meaning and the foundation of marriage is broken. Nowadays marriages seem to be more like contracts rather than a union of holy matrimony and vows are no longer held sacred . “ When marriage is influenced by Rationalism and God is removed, it becomes a contract, a mere legal
relationship ”(Martin, 2006). The commonality of it and its effects on a family, especially the children, causes patterns that can and normally are repeated. We should all keep in mind that without God, there is no guidance and the end result will be chaos. Even though change can and will happen throughout our lives and we will have to adapt to certain things and situation, our faith and belief in God should be consistent and without change. It is our faith that keeps us strong and it is God who guides us through the changes in our lives. So when times start to get tough, remember this verse, “ That your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God ” (1 Corinthians 2:5 ESV).
