Argument Evaluation Questions
NOTE: When complete, save this Word doc with the title Evaluation_PatherID where you replace “PantherID” with your PantherID number. Then submit this Word document along with the PDF of your argument map.
1.
Choose at least two premises and evaluate them
for truth
Premise #1: Smartphone use can cause anxiety and depression when a large amount of time is spent
on social-media platforms. I believe this claim because not only did the argument provide an explanation of activities on social media platforms increases the possibility of encountering negative
comments and bullying, but according to Very Well mind,” The
comments sections of social media and news outlets have become the new playground for online bullying
.” Being that I have practiced lateral reading onto this website, I highly believe that this claim is true.
Premise #2:
Smartphones provide kids with unsupervised internet access that can expose children to
harmful content. I believe this premise because the text gave me a credible explanation of the following being that kids fall prey to online predators posing as other kids online and I know that this is a true credibility because according to ABC News, a well know public news outlet, “16 men were arrested and were charged with luring and attempted sexual assault for allegedly using popular social media sites to identify children to groom for assault.” Being that this was a true event that happened in new jersey and with real victims and went public, I have reasonable cause to believe that online predators have the advantage to manipulate a child and put them in danger.
2.
Choose at least two inferences
and evaluate them for strength/weakness For each
inference that you choose, write below your explanation of why you think that inference is strong or weak, including at least one reason that support your claim.
The inference made between smartphone use in ages 8-12 often leads to addiction and kids are not particularly well-equipped to regulate their smartphone use is weak in my opinion. I think it is weak because its not particularly supporting the addiction, its simply making a different claim, but if it was to be true then the inference would still be weak but also factual. Mainly because addiction and being equipped falls under two different categories to explain and discuss.
The second inference between Smartphones provide kids with unsupervised internet access that can expose children to harmful content and kids exposed to sexually explicit content typically become sexually active at a much younger age than those not exposed to such content is very strong because
its true and also it corelates with each other and key indicator words that’s shared are expose, content, and kids.
3.
Give a verdict on the argument overall Write below whether you find the main claim to be good or bad AND be sure to include at least two very specific
reasons that support
y
our overall verdict.
I find the claim to be bad because for one you cannot prove based off this argument that all kids ages 8-12 are harmed by their smartphones, even though it targets a specific group there’s not enough supporting information to come to that conclusion. If the words were replaced with at risk rather harmed, I would agree that the argument is good. Secondly, the premises made such as smartphone use often leads to addiction in 8-12 year olds is biased because smartphones could become an addiction for all age groups and
it’s a weak inference.
