Case Study 1: Field Trip
1. What criteria can teachers use to determine if a field trip is a worthwhile experience?
A teacher can use various criteria to determine the worthwhileness of an off-premises field trip.
Teachers can consider the cultural and social aspects of a trip location, as well as the advantage
of the outdoor natural environment. It is also important to keep in mind how much enjoyment the
children will get out of the trip as well.
2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of using public transportation?
The advantages of public transportation include guaranteed liability insurance coverage and
adequate safety features that may not be present on personal or program-owned transportation.
The disadvantages of public transportation include the addition of a greater amount of stranger
interaction, transportation price, and scheduling issues.
3. How might visiting a site ahead of time help teachers to better plan for a field trip?
Visiting a site ahead of time can help teachers better plan for a field trip because it can bring to
light any security or health hazards that may be present at the trip location. Teachers can also
ensure that facility personnel are aware of the parameters of the trip, the ages of the children, as
well as any special needs the children may have.
4. What problems should teachers anticipate when taking children on field trips?
Our chapter mentions that teachers should anticipate some problems when taking children on
field trips. They should prepare for many added risks and liabilities that may require additional
precautions. Teachers need to carry a first-aid kit as well as any medications needed by children
while away from the classroom. Lastly, the teacher should be certain to remind children to
thoroughly wash their hands after petting any of the animals at the zoo, if relevant.
5. Are off premises field trips typically covered by school liability insurance policies?
According to the textbook, the center-owned transportation vehicle used to carry the children to
and from the off-premises field trip is required by law to carry liability insurance. The textbook
fails to specifically say if a field trip itself is typically covered by the policy or not.
