Theory of mind is an understanding that people have mental states such as desires, beliefs, and
intentions. These perceptions explain a person’s behavior. A person’s perception can affect their moral
stance on societal issues. During stage 4 of moral development – Authority and Maintaining Social Order;
a person feels that following rules is essential to a functioning society, so their moral beliefs in following
rules will guide their behavior. For example, if a Tom witnesses the corner store being robbed, he will call
the police and report the robbery because it is against the law and morally wrong. If Tom see’s the police
officer who responded to the call use excessive force against the person robbing the store, instead of
turning a blind eye, Tom will then also report the excessive force because he has a moral belief that
breaking the law is wrong.
I can use my understanding of theory of mind and moral development to bridge the opportunity gap. I
can do this by becoming a social worker and working with children and families in underprivileged
communities. I could also volunteer my mental health service’s at the local domestic violence shelter to
provide women and children with free counseling services. Having a strong moral development and
theory of mind allows me to feel empathy toward others. In the article, Paula discusses how to shift
value tensions of nurses from personal responsibility to enhancing decision making. As a nurse, by
acknowledging that individuals may not have the same opportunities as others, they acknowledge how
an individual’s social conditions shape their life situations, affect their decision making and acknowledge
an individual’s worth.
I can engage a friend to volunteer at a local food bank to help eradicate or at least mitigate poverty. It
shows my understanding of theory of mind by setting an example that my personal beliefs and desires
can help a societal cause. I always feel a strong desire to help others, especially those who are afforded
less opportunities.
Theory of mind applies to Social-Justice. Every individual deserves the same opportunities and by using
moral development in the healthcare field an individual can apply their skills to help enhance the lives of
others.
