1.De±ne the word philosophy. - Philosophy is the wisdom and pursuit of fundamental principles to understand life’s purpose. 2.List and de±ne the four branches of philosophical study. - METAPHYSICS: the study of reality to understand the essence of existence. - EPISTEMOLOGY: the study and understanding of nature and origin. - AXIOLOGY: the philosophical examination of values, mainly the way they formed ethically, and religious formation. - LOGIC: the study of reasonable and sound arguments, study of deductive inference. 3.Compare and contrast inductive and deductive reasoning. - INDUCTIVE REASAONING: begins with speci±c facts and leads to general conclusions - DEDUCTIVE REASONING: straightforward, general to speci±c. 4.List and describe the characteristics of the four educational philosophies described in your text. Be able to recognize examples of each (goals, methods, teacher role, student role, key ideas, and so forth). - PERENNIALISM: perceives nature and human nature as constant and unchanging. Education develops the intellectual discipline needed to seek timeless truths- this curriculum focuses on classical literature from Western culture. - ESSENTIALISM: they see the mind as a core of reality. Knowledge happens through direct contact with the physical world and reasoning from observation- this curriculum focuses on life skills, personal ±nance for a productive life. - ROMANTICISM: - PROGRESSIVISM: 5.Describe the ±elds of aesthetics and ethics. - Aesthetics explores the beauty we perceive, while ethics delves into the morality of human behavior.
6.Who is John Dewey, and with which educational philosophy is he most closely associated? What are considered his most important contributions to American education? - John Dewey believed that ideas served as tools for people to collaborate and tackle challenges together. He is closely linked to progressive education and was one of the early proponents of pragmatism, a philosophy that prioritizes practical problem-solving through hands-on experience. 7.What is an eclectic philosophy, and what are the hazards associated with holding such a position? - An eclectic philosophy embraces the belief that truth can be discovered in diverse sources, allowing individuals to choose from various perspectives. However, it's important to be cautious of potential pitfalls, such as the risk of careless reasoning. 8.-10. Select two of the videos viewed for Chapter 9 in Modules. Discuss what you learned for each one. - Progressive education in the 1940s :This video explains how in the U.S. public schools, for generations, they’ve followed the same routine an unchanging pattern. During the time the students have experienced unpleasant education- they were aimed to equip thems intelligently for their future by addressing their present times. This video also shows how Progressive education, despite a parent's worry about children not mastering the basics, embraces a positive perspective. It highlights various educators, like the renowned John Dewey. However, there's still someone who doubts its effectiveness. There's actually someone who proposes that ideas akin to progressive education contributed to the decline of ancient Greek civilization. Interestingly, the current debates on teaching methods bear resemblances to the educational discussions of the 1940s, Crazy! - Maxine Green- Philosopher, Imaginer, Inquirer: I’m not sure if there's a video; all I see is more of a blog. But what I’ve learned about Maxine is that she promotes philosophy and the practice of aesthetic education,n and social imagination. The Maxine Greene Institute aims to establish an inclusive and open environment
where no single entity or manifesto dominates. We encourage conversation, debate, and diverse perspectives on the development of aesthetic education and the concept of social imagination. As we know, aesthetic education is in²uenced by the ideas of various ±elds like psychology, philosophy, and education, even predating Dewey. Ideas should not be con±ned to institutions or exclusive boundaries. The Institute strives to create a space for free and autonomous individuals, enriching it with our own experiences and giving a name to what was previously unnamed. Let's keep fostering this inclusive space together!
