Araceli Valencia Dr. Mendoza Phil 112 30 November 2021 IV.Analysis & Discussion I believe that homeless individuals should have access to the needs they deserve. The homeless are a group of people who desperately need attention. Attention can vary in different ways, such as shelter, food, and doctors. If these needs were met, the homeless would be less prone to living in the street, and we would see fewer homeless individuals with mental health issues and health issues in general. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we can see an increase in homeless individuals who lack basic human comforts. I believe that if we change this tremendous problem in the world, we will see a decrease in homeless individuals. Some individuals would disagree with my viewpoint that giving these necessities to the homeless would be a bad idea. One can say that giving these necessities out will spike the homeless rate instead of decreasing it because a lot of individuals must work and pay out of pocket to have insurance to see doctors, have a roof on their head, and have a meal for themselves and their families. I know that many individuals would feel abrupt about this, but I believe it is fair that all individuals have an opportunity to better themselves if they are assisted. My research findings helped me elaborate on my knowledge of the homeless crisis. I learned that the use of simple arrangements in a shelter can be quite effective. These arrangements consist of managing the number of individuals at a shelter at a time, proper COVID testing, facemask usage, and social distancing between beds but also throughout the shelter. These findings contributed to a decrease in the spread of COVID-19 and benefited the shelters because they were able to provide the homeless with the ability to reopen and help the homeless community. Also, the findings suggest that mental health issues do contribute to an individual’s homelessness. The findings suggest that women are at high risk of experiencing mental health issues if they were homeless at a young age because they lacked social support and family support. These findings collaborate with my field of study in various ways. My goal is to become a psychologist. With this field comes a lot of attention to fine details, but it also comes with a great deal of compassion. I believe that helping the homeless would be a great way to learn how to be compassionate with individuals and how to help them. In the article Shelter Characteristics, Infection Prevention Practices, and Universal Testing for SARS-CoV-2 at Homeless Shelters in 8 US Urban Areas, there was one table. The table consisted of COVID testing staff and shelter locations, beds and mats available, and the percentage of beds filled in the shelter. In the article "Risk of mental ill-health among homeless women in Madrid, Spain," there were 4 tables. Table One demonstrates the living conditions amongst homeless women according to the risk of suffering from mental health problems. The second table talks about how stressful life events are for homeless women, according to the risk of suffering from mental health problems. which consisted of abandonment problems with a drug
problem, housing problems, and much more. Table 3 consisted of the individual's previous health history, while Table 4 consisted of an individual’s overall happiness, loneliness, and whether they had someone to talk to.
