What is Machery’s ‘nomological’ conception of human nature? How is it different from the ‘essentialist’ conception? Machery's "nomological" understanding of human nature offers a thought-provoking alternative to the conventional "essentialist" perspective. Machery's nomological perspective argues that human nature is best understood as a collection of statistical regularities and behavioural patterns, in contrast to essentialism, which holds that human nature is supported by fixed and fundamental traits shared by all humans. Under these circumstances, human nature takes on a dynamic and context-dependent quality, changing in response to genetic, environmental, and cultural variances. This perspective challenges the idea of an immutable essence by highlighting the flexibility and diversity of human qualities. Machery's argument raises important ethical and theological questions since it casts doubt on the existence of a common human nature that could be used as a standard for morality. The nomological perspective encourages us to acknowledge the complexity of human behaviour and traits, realising that they are not confined to a fixed set of intrinsic attributes but rather influenced by a variety of circumstances. This change in viewpoint provides insightful information on the always changing discussion about human nature and how it affects ethical issues.
