This highlights how moral and religious dilemmas can arise in social work, and the complexities of navigating such situations. The moral and religious dilemmas that arise in human services are particularly complex, as they can arise when a client asks for help getting an abortion, but their social worker, for example, strongly opposes abortions in general. On the opposite end of the spectrum, a social worker might suggest that a client sees a medical or mental health professional who supplies therapies that are against their religious beliefs, such as taking specific medications or retrieving blood. As a social worker, it is imperative to prioritize those needs of a client over their own convictions. Any refusal to aid the client in the abortion process for a reason that is unrelated to the client’s functional needs is considered abuse of the social worker's oversight. Therefore, a social worker's main responsibility is to advocate for the client's well-being and provide them with the best possible care. If a social worker is opposed to abortion but does not believe that it is in the client's best interest, they should refer the client to another social worker or provider who can provide the client with the care they need. A social worker can avoid the second situation by approaching intervention planning with mindfulness. They may have never collaborated with a client who adheres to a particular morality or religion. However, even so, they can still avoid problems if they just get everyone's approval before recommending certain services. Mindful intervention planning is key to avoiding potential problems when collaborating with a client who adheres to a particular morality or religion. For instance, if a client is a devout Christian, the social worker should ensure that any recommendations they make are in line with their faith, such as referring them to a church-based service or counseling.
