Doing the Right Thing: Week Three Discussion
This week’s conversation on Doing the Right Thing, was very intriguing. The panelist concentrated on how community and institutes play an important role in our personal moral code and affect our ethical manner. In order to fully grasp the idea, one must understand that in
order to live ethically, and carry out moral code, we must recognize that no one can do it alone. We need someone to hold us accountable, a community to support us (
Colson Center for Christian Worldview, 2013, Session #3).
For individuals to maintain or improve moral cognition, one must eliminate outside influences and distorting factors (
Klenk and Sauer, 2021
). Reflecting on the 18-month program created to educate inmates on transitioning to live a more fulfilling life, was very noteworthy. The fact that this program alone, had decreased the total number of inmates that were released
and did not become a reoffender, goes to show emotions can be trained and ethics can be taught. By creating this community, it has instilled a trusting relationship within the members. It has also given the members the opportunity to be held accountable and stand true to their moral code. Without directly saying it, the inmates lead to believe that they could not have made the transition alone (
Colson Center for Christian Worldview, 2013, Session #3). This program also shows with proper education, support and desire, change is achievable.
It is possible is grow our ethics and train our emotions. In order to do this, it takes a strong person and that person must have an even stronger support system to help them grow and hold them accountable. One of the most important institutes referred to is, family. The upbringing within a strong family tie and a household that transmits moral and ethical values, is

crucial in the way an individual becomes a productive and ethical adult (James and Giwa-
Daramola, 2023). There are times, when our decisions and judgements are flawed. It is up to the individual, along with the support, to find themselves back on the path of flourishing. References
