Student Name: Wilbur W. Lewis Ethics Journal Template Module 1: Week 1 Reading: Hill - Ch. 1 1. What do you think Maria should do? Why? A: There are a few options I believe Maria should run by her supervisors. While looking at how 120,000 could be cut. My first option would be to restructure all work schedules to see where a deduction can be made. Another option is to conduct a performance review and make a sound decision on the information provided after an accurate assessment of the team’s performance has been conducted. Lastly, she could take a temporary pay cut until the organization is in a better financial situation to prevent losing anyone from her team. 2. What guidance does the holiness-justice-love model provide for her? A: The depictions of the holiness justice love model could not have a better representation of a three-legged stool. No one of these virtues can stand alone. Holiness provides strength, just provides balance and love provides passion 3. Of holiness, justice and love, which would be the most difficult for Maria to apply? Which is generally most lacking in the marketplace? A: In the business, arena love must be the most difficult for Maria to apply in this situation. As human beings we all have a natural connection with one another, however; as Christians, we are often seen as weak because of our sheer commitment to our Christian values. There has been great controversy about the separation of religion and business while in a business environment. Any organization needs to ensure they are taking care of the greatest investment, their employees. If an organization was to conduct business, the way Maria organization did without any concern for the efforts it would have not only on those affected but the entire workforce. Reading: Hill - Ch. 2 1. What do you think Jonah should do? A: Jonah needs to express to his supervisor and teammates his reservation about his personal beliefs. At times we are tasked with to assignments by our employers that may go against our spiritual and personal beliefs. His concern about working with a company that operates a pornographic website may cause some distain within the workplace. 2. If Jonah follows the guidelines of this chapter, what should he do?
A: As an auditor, Jonah responsibility is to audit the finances of an organization regardless of how one may feel about the organization or its subsidiaries. There is a distinct line between professional and personal relationship. One must learn to how conducts his professional duties accordingly, for example what is the company in question is a major client for your employer some may believe it may be better to terminate your employment or assign another auditor to prestigious cliental do to your inability to maintain a professional manner. Even as lawyer battle or defend their clients’ actions regardless of their personal feelings about whether they committed the crime of not one has a duty to fulfill. 3. Identify holiness concerns in your workplace (or a previous workplace). Have these concerns been properly resolved? How or why not? A: Being in the military the workplace environment can become a little colorful at times, but sexual harassment, drug use, hazing, and sexual misconduct. Are against our values and military law. Even with the constant training and lectures on the topic there are still some that think the rule do not apply to them. When they are confronted there are strict policies in place to have them reprimanded, in hope is shows that we must maintain a professional and safe work environment for all. Module 2: Week 2 Reading: Hill - Ch. 3 1. In your opinion, is this action just? Why or why not? A: In a situation was the lively hood of a neighborhood I personally do not feel as though two hours alone is enough time to hear the facts and put it to a vote. However, another question arises does this fall in line with the county policies for vote on a topic. That information is not presented. 2. Analyze the commission’s action in light of this chapter’s definition of justice. A: Due process was not in the decision-making process of the commission. Two members are in an election year while the third has a personal relationship with the company’s CEO. History shows that in an election year one may do anything for a vote to have the upper hand on a running mate. Some may also observe the personal relationship with the company’s CEO as a problem because the commission member may be swayed to side with the CEO to ensure that their friend company is granted approval for the expansion. 3. Does the concept of holiness provide any additional insights? A: As human beings and Christians he can do nothing be strive for perfection. We all fall short to GODs image; however, he provided us with a mind to make decision and the power of free will. If the commission look at the fact and hear the concerns of it constitutes the power rest with the commission. The commission member was elected to make decisions on behalf of its county. However, we must believe that those that were elected are of moral character and will conduct there duties on behalf of the county.
4. Identify a situation in your work environment (or a previous one) that raised justice concerns. Was is resolved justly? How or why not? This Sailor suffered for two years and being treated like trash because everyone had already assumed that he was guilty. The charges were dropped but the Sailor never recovered and requested to be separated with an honorable discharge be of how he was treated. Reading: Hill - Ch. 4 1. What do you think Dora should do? A: Being in charge of a pharmacy is a huge responsibility because an accurate account of medications is required due to federal guidelines. I understand that Ralph has a situation, but everyone could be reprimanded or even of out a job because he is stealing medication. The theft needs to be reported and Ralph will have to face the consequences 2. What is the “loving” thing for Dora to do? A: To assist Ralph in finding a legal means to acquire the medication for his niece. Maybe an Rx rep or company can donate the medication, or the retail store will understandable and pick up the cost of the medications 3. Analyze the case through all three moral lenses – holiness, justice and love. When combined, what guidance do they give Dora? A: She needs to heed to federal guidelines, enforce her employers’ policies, and assist someone in need. She could not say anything, but she may suffer consequences such as being reprimanded or even losing her job. Dora can show compassion by assisting Ralph in trying to find a reasonable means to get the medication need without putting one in jeopardy or continuing and take the risk of being fired knowing she will be helping a person in need. Module 3: Week 3 Reading: Hill - Ch. 5 1. What do you think of Christy’s list? Do you agree more with her or with Jean? Why? A: I can understand a few of the jobs on her list, but I’m a little confused about how a car dealership, potato chip manufacturer and nuclear power plant operator made the list. The technology is totally legal, I have had family member purchase identical items in the past. What moral guidance do the concepts of this chapter provide in this case? A: in the submissive model one maybe ventures beyond there one belief just as long as the actions are legal. This model creates a dilemma within one because it supersedes one’s religious beliefs because one’s obedience to the law. Unlike the purist model it doesn’t allow one to compromise one’s ethics to accommodate their employers. 3. Identify moral dilemmas you have experienced (or witnessed) in your role as an agent in the workplace. A: As a Naval Officer, I can come across many Sailors from various walks of life, and as an officer my job is to enforce procedural compliance, enforce naval regulations and reprimand those who do. Unless he can provide proof that a greenhouse allows plants to grow quicker, it was quite a play on words in an attempt to draw would be clients to his store. However, this could have an adverse effect he can lose whatever loyal customer base that it left our potential clients would just label It was junk or a marketing scheme. 2. If not, why not? A: Yes, I believe that Harry should implement the Theory Y management because the mindset of the workforce has changed, and employees know there worth it can also be seen as a form of worker abuse. Employees need to have an active role in their daily task, one should be able to tell their team and the team should be able to put together a course of action to achieve the set goal. Without playing an active role and being just a mindless robot, an organization will miss out on any initiative and what their employees bring to the table. Employees would feel more invested and even connected to an organization when they are committed to the objective. 2. What risks does Harry run if he does not make any changes? A: If Harry does not make any changes to his family business, he may risk losing his entire workforce due to a hostile working environment. What impact does this have on your level of motivation and performance? A: I don’t have a supervisor, but I embrace Theory Y because it allows a Sailor to be engaged and lead others throughout the day-to-day operations. I believe by utilizing Theory Y people are more engaged and understand their role in the organization, but this also allows them to build leadership skills to assume bigger roles in the organization in the future. 4. If “covenantal management” were fully implemented in your company, what changes would have to be made?
A: As a United State Naval Officer, and member of the Department of Defense we have made huge strides in ensuring a safe working environment, fair wages, opportunities to advance without any prejudice of one’s race, color, or creed. Servant leader is a lot ingrained in every member since their introduction to the armed services during bootcamp. I believe we can do better in recognition and providing the basic leadership traits so future leaders can leader other and grow within the organization. Reading: Hill - Ch. 12 1. What dignity principles, if any, have been violated in this case? A: I believe the first thing that comes to mind is privacy, there are a few exclusions that I believe are overreaching. I can understand the ex-felons, smoke, and those that engage in skydiving. I under the family commitment to their religious beliefs. A hiring decision should be based on performance and a clean background check. The focus should be on their ability to do there assigned task. 2. How do you react to HC’s approach? Which criteria do you deem to be appropriate? Inappropriate? Why? A: I knew a local church that was very critical about who they allowed as member due to the pastor’s belief of if he made it difficult, he was essentially trimming the fat. As far as the HC job application a Top-Secret clearance with the federal government isn’t that invasive. There has to be a clearer understanding on some of these exclusions because if not I see a lawsuit in their future. Some of the exclusions are valid because they show about one character but more than a few are just ridiculous. 3. Have you ever witnessed an unfair disciplinary action or dismissal at work? How did you react? Explain. A: No, I have not witnessed any workplace discrimination Module 7: Week 7 Reading: Hill - Ch. 13 1. In what ways is the situation in India similar to that in the United States? Dissimilar? A: We have legislation in place here in the United States to provide some basic rights to everyone, one of the major differences between the United States is the Caste system that is in place due to Hindu theology. This theology states whom one marries, educational opportunities, and what careers one shall choose as an profession. The US values itself on providing opportunities for advancement, education for all of its citizen where India does not. 2. With which side do you agree—the protestors or the government? Why? A: I would have to side with the protestors, people who are actively pursuing medical
professions are afraid that they will not have any employment once they complete their studies because of the caste system. I believe if India continues to have the caste system in place that the county will be on the one that suffers because they would drive their greatest asset the people away in search of a better way of life. 3. Describe incidents of workplace discrimination you have witnessed. A: In the military I have seen people advance whom I felt were not qualified or deserved it. Regardless of how I felt, I know there will be many instances of this happening in any organization. In my opinion in time, it will show they are now ready, but regardless of how I felt I will offer my assistance if needed. As an Christians I hate watching other people fail. Selecting people for advance is a difficult situation regardless of how you decided to rate, categorize, or chart ones efforts. 4. What are your views on affirmative action? A: I believe that if you work hard for your dreams and admirations you will achieve it. At times we have to be our biggest cheer leader to motivate ourselves. I’m not a fan of quota based systems and I will always believe that a person be awarded by their merits. Reading: Hill - Ch. 14 1. How would the following environmental ethics evaluate this case? To do another else would be considered disrespectful 2. Discuss one additional area that was interesting to you in this chapter. A: I found the information on bribery to very informative, here in the United Stated we have various laws against the use of bribery; however, in other parts of the world it is considered
normal practice. At least in other parts of the world its upfront and personal while in the United States is hidden behind legislation and vague legal terminology. 3. Describe the ways in which global business has impacted your life. A: As a member of the armed forces every part, pencil, and critical component that we use to defend freedom and democracy around the world is shipped, manufactured and warehouse in one way shape or form by the global business complex. We have to maintain various supply chain and logistic channels on a global scale to ensure that we are able to defend freedom at a moment’s notice. 4. How do you personally react to bribery, sweatshops and child labor? A: I personally feel that it is immoral and wrong to take advantage of another human being.
