Personal Leadership Philosophies
In order to become an effective leader, developing a leadership philosophy is very important for establishing an identity as a leader. This philosophy is a set of values that incorporates their core values and strengths and influences the decisions of the leader. In order to develop a person's leadership philosophy, the leader must understand their own values, strengths, and weakness that contribute to their leadership style. Throughout this paper, I will explore the different factors contributing to my leadership philosophy.
One of my core values is providing service to others. As a nurse, it is a natural instinct to service others and provide quality care. Providing high-quality care is central to leadership (James et al., 2021). Another core value includes communication. A portion of communication includes emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand one's own feelings and to assess and respond to the feelings of others (Mansel & Einion, 2019). In a leadership role, possessing emotional intelligence is very important as it gives you the ability to navigate conflict and regulate the emotional state of employees, patients, and families. In addition, emotionally intelligent leaders are also self-aware, self-regulating, and mindful of their emotional responses and those of others as well (Butler, 2021). Another core value is being team-oriented. I am always looking for ways to help my team function more effectively and lend a helping hand to my team members whenever I am needed.
After taking the Gallup StrengthsFinder Assessment of leadership skills and qualities, I learned some new strengths about myself. My strengths identified in the assessment were futuristic, strategic, arranger, positivity, and achiever. Futuristic is someone who is always looking ahead toward the future. This strength tends to inspire hope in others as a futuristic person is always looking ahead to a brighter future. Strategic has a distinct way of thinking

(Rath, 2007) and coming up with alternative strategies. This is a very good strength to have as a leader and one I have working to develop. It is always a good idea to have a backup plan just in case the original plan does not work or needs to be modified. By being strategic and having a plan in place prevents further delays in care. Arrangers like effective flexibility which means we like to be in charge. Arrangers function best when they are able to organize the schedule and plans. This also goes hand-in-hand with strategic as they thrive on pivoting during planning and scheduling conflicts. The last strength identified was positivity. Positivity includes looking for the positive in every situation (Rath, 2007). Positivity is definitely a strength that defines me. I try my best to have positive encounters with everyone, whether it is by providing words of encouragement, offering to help, or simply just a nice greeting. Two behaviors I would like to improve on include being reserved and timid. When I am around people I am not familiar with I naturally am very quiet and tend to avoid speaking, even when I want to. This has left some with the impression that I have social anxiety or that I am “mean”, which is not true. I also would like to improve on being timid with senior nurses and doctors. While I feel very confident in my nursing experience and knowledge, sometimes when I am in rounding or discussing care with nurse leaders or doctors, I can be very timid and allow them to talk over me sometimes. One of the solutions I have been looking into to assist me with this is to participate in a public speaking course or similar setting. This is to help me practice speaking in a
room with multiple people, similar to rounds, and address questions without losing control and being able to still convey my thoughts.
My mission is to complete my master's degree armed with the knowledge and skills to be a clinical nurse informaticist. My vision is to continue to improve myself personally, and professionally.
