Project One
The topic to be discussed is police brutality against African Americans. This issue is particularly relevant to my major, which is criminal justice, because we, as law enforcement officials, are often accused of using excessive force. Law enforcement agencies need to listen to all perspectives on this topic. About police brutality, there are two main arguments: police using improper, excessive behavior toward citizens, and police performing their jobs effectively and protecting citizens and themselves.
The following text is directed towards law enforcement officers and those under their protection. I anticipate that the biggest obstacle to my argument, that officers are often guilty of using excessive force and engaging in improper behavior, will come from within law enforcement itself. Law enforcement officers may justify their use of excessive force or quick actions as a means of self-protection. However, as someone aspiring to become a part of law enforcement, I may face a challenge in getting citizens to listen to what I have to say. Some individuals may be hesitant to hear me out due to my career goals. The majority of police officers do not see anything wrong with their actions and believe that they are simply doing their job according to the rules. I understand some points from their perspective, but right is right, and wrong is wrong.
My goal with this essay is to encourage law enforcement to be open-minded and view situations from different perspectives. Additionally, I aim to facilitate mutual understanding between both parties and to rebuild trust between African American citizens and law enforcement.
Three key points that will help me support my arguments are unjustified killings, use of excessive force, and discrimination. Two key points that will be helpful in supporting my key
points will be the George Floyd case and the Rodney King case. George Floyd was murdered by A former police officer kneeling on his neck to the point where he could not breathe and unfortunately died. That is from excessive use of force, and it caused an unjustifiable death. Rodney King was an African-American man brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers in 1991.
Two key sources that will be helpful in supporting my key points will be the article Controversial Topic: Police Brutality by Dave Tomar and In the Wakes of Rodney King: Militant Evidence and Media Activism in the Age of Viral Black Death by Ryan Watson. George
Floyd was mentioned in the first source he was murdered by A former police officer kneeling on his neck to the point where he could not breathe and unfortunately died. That’s from excessive use of force and it caused an unjustifiable death. The second source is about Rodney King who was an African-American man brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers in 1991.
To ensure that I successfully incorporate evidence into my essay, I will identify all relevant facts that support my key points and main argument. Additionally, I will leverage my sources to substantiate my claims and provide ample detail to illustrate the reality of police brutality towards African Americans. The feedback from my instructor has had a positive impact
on my progress. It has encouraged me to think more deeply and become more detailed and understanding in my work and the topics I am discussing. As a result, I have revised my argument and made my three key points more detailed
