1 Experience with Theology Essay Assignment THEO104, Professor R. Lumadue Samantha M. Spence January 16, 2024
2 Experience with Theology Essay Assignment When I hear the word theology, a newly beginning journey comes to mind. This course will serve as a true introduction to what theology is and how I can implement what I learn here into my new career path. Upon completion of my degree program, I will become a social worker. As a social services student at Liberty University, I have dived in headfirst learning about social services, but even more so about religion and the importance of strengthening my relationship with God. Theology is defined as “the study of religious faith, practice and experience” (Theology, 2024). There have been a multitude of classes that I have enrolled in and taken in my time as a student at Liberty, however each one has had their own unique way of teaching me more about my own self, my belief system and has substantially strengthened my relationship with God and my faith overall. This was my first time in life of hearing about theology, as well as my first time actually knowing what it means and pertains to. Prior to enrolling into this class, I would not have known what theology was, nor the importance of such in the dynamic of understanding religion. Prior to this first week of courses, as well as my first week enrolled in a Theology course, I have not heard of this, nor have I had any experience in this study. I enrolled in this course as it is a required pre-requisite based on my overall career choice and field of study. However, after looking up the definition of this course, I do see where this can be critical to providing my future clients and coworkers with the most wholesome interactions with me in my newfound career path. I would believe that the extent of my experience in this study is very minimal, aside from my learning from this course a tremendous amount of information about the Bible and Jesus Christ. While I have always believed that there was a God and that there is an importance of Christianity, I did not, prior to being a student at Liberty University, know so much in depth
3 about the Bible and how that applies to my daily life and thought processes. The importance that this course will have on my personal life, professional life and the life of those that I will touch through my profession will be tremendous, and I can not wait to learn and truly understand more about theology. Aside from the obvious desire to excel in this course and have a passing grade, there are several things I hope to take away upon the completion of this course. I am very hopeful to gain insight and understanding into other religions, not just Christianity. In my upcoming career, I will serve a multitude of cultures, each with their own unique belief systems and potentially no belief systems at all. I want to be the most supportive to all of my clients, as well as those that I will encounter along the way in my personal life. Upon completion of this course, I do believe that I will be able to perform wholesome inclusion for all of my future clients. At no point do I believe I will ever learn everything that surrounds any one religion, as the information and facts are bountiful. I do hope, however, that I can be a wealth of knowledge and apply all of the information that I have learned throughout this course and others to a level of self-sufficiency, understanding and overall independence, alongside of their potentially newfound or strengthened faith. Should I encounter clients or those in my life that may not have any belief system, I hope to utilize my knowledge to potentially show them the benefits of having a everlasting relationship with a higher power that does in fact love, care and nurture them as well as their needs if they are serving faithfully.
