My education philosophy falls within the progressivism paradigm. Progressivism theorists, John Dewey and Maria Montessori, believed that learning should be based on experience and should focus on development of the child as a whole. Progressivism not only focuses on developing students academically, but socially as well. It accomplishes this by teaching the students through real life interactions. “ Progressivism… denies the traditional view of an education system that is teacher-centered.” (Zidi et al, 39) This student-centered philosophy allows the teachers to act as guides for their students. A classroom curriculum built on this philosophy focuses on the experiences, interests, and needs of the students which, in turn,
creates a more welcoming and positive classroom environment and provides students with an education that is more meaningful and relevant to the students. My vision for my students as an educator is to provide my students with an open classroom environment that is safe and approachable. My mission is to establish a learning environment where students are at the center by giving students the opportunity to build their own knowledge through their own experiences. In doing this, I hope to show students that learning is a life-long experience that not only occurs in the classroom, but everywhere they go. In order to effectively apply this philosophy, I will enforce a curriculum in which students are in close contact with their community and other surroundings rather than remaining stationary in the classroom. For example, if I lived inMemphis, and my students were learning about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., I would take them on a trip to the National Civil Rights Museum. In doing this, students would not simply be learning about the assassination of MLK and the Civil Rights Movement, but they would be seeing and experiencing it in real time which is in alignment with the progressivism philosophy of teaching that I intend to uphold.
As previously mentioned, my role as a teacher of a progressivism-centered classroom is that of a guide or facilitator for the students. “
Since the student has such an important role in the learning, the teacher needs to guide the students in ‘learning how to learn’” (Labaree, 2005, p. 277) My responsibility as their teacher will be to teach them the skills that they need to learn instead of only teaching them content. Teaching in this manner will motivate students to think critically and see learning as an opportunity for growth rather than a burden. I will establish this as my role by acting as a collaborator and working with my students to determine what will be learned, while still keeping in mind the educational outcomes that must be obtained. Some examples of instructional methods I will use to promote my role as a collaborator with my students are using socially relevant themes, engaging students in critical thinking and encouraging the use of group activities just to name a few.
In closing, my overall goal as an educator is to provide my students with the necessary skill sets that they can carry with them, not only throughout their educational careers, but throughout their entire lives.
