Discussion Thread: Comparing Biblical Leadership and Secular Leadership Approaches There is no lack of theories as it pertains to what it takes to lead effectively and efficiently. After reviewing the various readings this week, how would you describe to someone the two major differences, from your perspective, between a biblical and secular approach to leadership? After reviewing the various readings this week, I would describe the two significant differences between a biblical and secular approach to leadership by comparing that one is driven by faith development and the other is driven by professional development. The biblical approach to leadership is rooted in religious principles and scriptural teachings, while the secular approach emphasizes non-religious principles and values. The first major difference between a biblical and secular approach to leadership lies in their foundation of authority and purpose. My perspective comparison theory is that the biblical approach to leadership is more on the holistic side and that the secular approach to leadership is more partial in development. Chelsea Knight describes being a mentor as taking an influential important role in another person’s life. 1 While this is a true statement, the way in which one is influenced varies drastically based on the leadership approach, which could be biblical or secular. The biblical approach has one goal and that is to make someone look like Jesus. On the other hand, the secular approach exists for “professional development, leadership skills, and guiding people to skills that they want to acquire. 2 I have always felt that leadership is leadership no matter what type of organization. Whether you are leading people in a church or leading people in a secular organization, your ability to lead is determined by the success of the organization and the sentiments of the people being led by you. However, I do see two major differences between a biblical and secular approach to leadership, neither of which is based on the organization but rather on the leader. The two major differences, from my perspective, is first, the person’s motivation or focus for leading and second, who the leader is allowing to guide or lead them. 1 Chelsea Knight, What is Christian Mentoring, and How Do I Do It? 2 Ibid, Knight
