What images of salvation are seen in the Bible? Images of salvation are seen as rescue, healing, redemption, ransom, freedom, and forgiveness. 2. What is justification? Justification is God’s work in justifying sinners, and forgiving our sin and making us right with God. 3. What is imputed righteousness and imparted righteousness? Imputed righteousness is the concept of the righteousness of Christ being imputed or “assigned” to believers. 4. How does Calvinism and Arminianism differ in their understanding of salvation? Calvinists believe that God is the only actor in salvation, and puts the basis for who is saved in God’s sovereign will. While Arminians believe that God works together with human beings in the process of salvation, and that that basis for who is saved is known by God, but determined by the will of people. 5. In one sentence or two, explain the following models of the atonement:
a. Deification: This highlights the connection between the incarnation and humanity, pointing to humanity to becoming God. b. Christus Victor: This could be considered the dramatized model of atonement because it describes God as a triumphant victor who fights against evil to reconcile the world to Himself. c. Substitutionary Atonement: This describes how when Jesus Christ died, He suffered as a substitute in the place of and on behalf of fallen humanity. d. Moral Exemplar: This describes Jesus as the moral example of atonement/how we should live. Jones - Chapter 8 - “The Holy Spirit” 1. What did Gregory of Nyssa write about the divinity of the Holy Spirit? He wrote that the Spirit is equal to the Father snd Son, and that is a clear testimony from Scripture. 2. What does it mean that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son? This means that the relationship with the Holy Spirit comes after the relationship with the Father and Son, and the Spirit is sent from the Son. 3. Why is it no appropriate to call the Holy Spirit “it”? The Spirit is considered to be a personal being who has the ability to be in a relationship with others. This makes the Holy Spirit a person who should be considered “He” or “Him” instead of “it.” 4. Why is the claim that someone can be “spiritual but not religious” a problem? This creates a spirituality that is focused inward, personally/privately, and seems to separate/hide spirituality from others. This takes away the experience of Christians being able to live with the Holy Spirit and practice their relationship with Him out in the world. 5. How is the Holy Spirit working today? The Spirit is working by bringing glory to the historical work of Jesus, and the Spirit helps us testify to what Jesus has and is still doing in our lives and the lives of others. Reflection Questions - 75 words minimum for each response Jones - Chapter 7 - “The Work of Jesus Christ.” 1. Jones lists several models of atonement; which one stands out to you and why? Of the types of atonement, substitutionary atonement stood out to me the most. I think this was the one that stood out to me the most because it is the one that makes the most sense to me. This makes sense to me because a substitute is something that takes the place of another thing. This is
exactly what Jesus did for us. He took our place as sinners and took out sin so that we can live eternally with Him. Jones - Chapter 8 - “The Holy Spirit” 1. Jones writes - “God does not just have relationships; God is relationship.” How have you experienced a relationship with God? I feel as if I have experienced a relationship with God, particularly through His word and through prayer. However, I feel like these two things are especially effective because of the Spirit. I feel as if God’s word comes alive in a way through the Spirit, and prayer becomes more of a conversation type with the Spirit as well. I have also learned to grow my relationship with God by learning to be still and take moments to be silent/in solitude.
