1 Week 2: Case Study Assignment: Bully Reflective Paper Vanessa Soberon Central State University: ECE4420: Profession Ethics & Responsibility Dr. Wendy G. Ricci, EdD August 28, 2023
2 Week 2: Case Study Assignment: Bully Reflective Paper Question 1: Is this an ethical issue or an ethical dilemma?  Explain your thoughts with supporting details?  I think it is an ethical issue, because we need to make sure that we have the best interest for our students . Carl sees a group of three boys playing and he wants to play with them. He goes up to the boys and ask if he can play with them. The boys tell Carl that they have formed a club and he is not a member and can’t play with them. The boys tell Carl it is a “cool” club, and he is not cool. Carl keeps asking if he can play with them and finally they tell Carl if he wants to join he will need to put dirt on his face. Carl tells the boy that the other two boys don’t have dirt on their faces, but they tell Carl if you want to join the club you need smear dirt on your face. This is not okay and we as educators need to make sure that we are taking care of our students. Question 2: Identify conflicting responsibilities/perspectives. Examples of conflicting responsibilities/perspectives in this case study: Bully/Two Bystanders - The boys who are telling Carl if he wants to join the group he needs to put dirt on his face. The boys are saying that Carl can’t play in the group because Carl is not a member of the group. They also say that it is the “cool” club and Carl is not a member. Carl- During outdoor time Carl sees a group of three boys and he wants to play with them, so Carl asks if he can play and the boys telling him “No”. Carl keeps asking them he wants to play them. Finally, the boys tell Carl if he wants to join the group he will need to smear dirt on his face. Teacher- As they teacher I would talk with the three boys and ask them “why” they were asking Carl to smear dirt on his face? Parents of Bully- As a parent I would ask my son why he was being a bully to another peer, and it was not okay to be doing this.
3 Parents of Bystanders - As the parents, I would talk with my sons asking them why they would be following someone else actions. I would explain that bully is not okay, and they need to be a leader and not follower. Parents of Carl- As a parent to Carl, I would set a meeting with Carl’s teacher and asking what is going on and how we can prevent this from happening. Principal- As the principal of the school, I would set up meetings with all parents. I would meet with teachers of the boys. Plan on how we can make sure that this doesn’t happen again. Question 3: Look for guidance in the NAEYC Code. Review the values, ideals, and principles, and select at least three principles and three ideals that apply to this scenario. Ethical Responsibilities to Children-Section 1 I-1.2 we need to have base practices and have current knowledge and research in the field of early children education, child development, and related disciplines. I-1.5, we need to make sure to always create and maintain a safe and healthy environment for our students. I-1.9- we need to advocate for and ensure that all children including those with special needs, have access to the support services needed to be successful. Principles- P1.1-above all we shall not harm children. We need to make sure that children are always safe while in our care. Even through this principle is taking about educators we can still always apply it to our students too. P1.7- We shall strive to build individual relationships with each child. We need to be role models to our students and teaching them to be respectful to their peers and creating a positive learning environment. P1.11- When we become aware of a practice or situation that endangers the health, safety, or well-being of children, we have an ethical responsibility to protect children or inform parents and/or others who can. All the ideals and principles say that as educators we need to protect our students and making sure they are in a safe and healthy school environment. Question 4: Based on your understanding of the Code, and using your best professional judgment, describe what you think is the most ethically defensible course of action.  I would take the group of boys and talk with them and say what they did to Carl is not okay and they were being disrespectful to him. I would ask them to take a few minutes to think about what they did and how they would feel if this happened to them. I would ask each

4 of them to share what their thoughts were and how they can make sure it won’t happen again. After having our talk, I would let the boys know that I am going to read a story to them about Bullying, the story is called “Shubert’s BIG Voice”. After reading the book to the boys, I would ask them questions about how Shubert felt when he was getting bullied and if thought Carl felt the same way too. This book can help the boys see that being a bully to someone is not okay at all. The book also helps and show ways for teachers to help children build character through conflict. Question 5: Based on the solutions you generated for Question 4, what are some possible consequences and repercussions of proposed solutions to all concerned parties?  1. I would give the boys consequences for their actions. Ex. No recess, no fun Friday etc. 2. I would investigate a way we can implement a bulling intervention program at school. 3. No end of the month student store. I would explain to the boys that these are their consequences for their actions. I would also set up daily classroom commitments. Examples are “I commit to show respect to others”, “I commit to keep my hands to myself” etc. By having commits will show students to be respectful to one another and this will also students reminded other students to remember their daily commitment.
