Report
One issue that was presented this week and has a big impact on cultural diversity is the increasing occurrence of chronic illnesses amongst different ethnic groups. Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, affect certain ethnic populations due to various factors, including genetic predisposition, socio-economic status, cultural practices, and access to healthcare (McEwan & Wills, 2021). It is crucial that healthcare providers are culturally aware and sensitive to provide proper and effective care to different populations. By demonstrating cultural competence and respect for diverse beliefs and practices, health care providers can foster a safe and inclusive environment where patients feel comfortable discussing their chronic illness concerns and seeking appropriate care. Health promotion is essential in addressing chronic diseases amongst different ethnic groups because it involves encouraging patients to improve their health and properly manage chronic diseases. Physicians and nurses play a big role in health promotion by providing education in lifestyle modifications, medication administration, preventative care, and risk factors associated with chronic diseases. In providing education, physicians and nurses should adopt a patient-centered approach and develop a plan that will consider the patients cultural background and preferences. Otherwise, the patient will be more inclined to not be compliant and exacerbate their disease. Effective communication is crucial in supporting different ethnic groups and ensuring the patient fully understands their diagnosis and plan of care. Healthcare providers can provide effective communication by utilizing general terms, interpreters, visual aids, and most importantly appropriate communication techniques based on the patients culture. Also, nurses and physicians should properly assess the patients level of comprehension to ensure they understand and agree. Reference: McEwan, M., & Wills, E. M. (2021).
