Report
A culturally competent care is one that meets the linguistic, cultural and social needs of the patients. It refers to the ability of the healthcare systems and professional to deliver quality care that needs of the patients without conflicts. A culturally competent health care improves quality of care, health outcomes as well as eliminates the health disparities in the community. As such, developing a culturally competent care for the African American community can go a long way in improving their health outcome as well as reduce the disparities affecting them. Tailing care delivery to suit the culture of the people improves health outcome as culture is important in improving the wholesome individual (Purnell & Fenkl, 2019). This makes it important for the health care system to design a culturally competent care policy to improve the health of the community African Americans have a distinct culture, different from other population. One of their major characteristics is their large families and a dynamic economic situation. The gap between the rich and the poor continues to grow, similar to their white counterparts m additional African Americans are susceptible to many infections primarily due to cultural affliction, which limits them from seeking medical care. As such, many of them are not medically covered despite their limited access to quality care. Their low income and poor access to quality care leads them to have a sedentary lifestyle with minimal physical activity and poor eating habits. As such, The African American community has high morbidity and mortality as a result of chronic diseases such an obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases and cancer (Clark et al., 2018). One of the culturally competent car strategies for African American is including members of the community in the system as well as in the health care decisions making process. These members will ensure that the decision made favor the community and are culturally competent. Other strategies would be coordination with the tradition healer. African Americans are rooted to their
traditional practices including healers and therefore coordinating with them will increase the community trust in the healthcare system, which will in turn urge them to seek medical care. Providing culture tailored training services is another strategy that can help develop culturally competent care to African American. Through the training, all members involved in provision of care will have an understanding of the culture that impacts the health of the community, as well as their customs, social behaviors and ideas. Understanding this aspect of culture will assist the providers in deliver optimum and culturally acceptable care. Another strategy would be to develop rapport and trust with the community. This can be done through engaging in the community activities which will help the providers to build relationships and trust with the members. Honoring their beliefs and desires such as herbal healing can help build trusting relationships with the community, which will increase their engagement with their health. Developing a culturally competent care when dealing with multicultural communities such as African American can improve their health outcome as they will be willing to seek medical care and interact with the providers.
