There are a multitude of benefits of becoming certified in Medical Assisting. Most importantly, it
proves your commitment to your profession. Your certification also allows you to work anywhere from New York to California since your national certification are valid credentials throughout the United States. It also proves to your future employers that you have attained the required clinical and administrative skills to allow you to excel as a MA.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that there are five main certifications for medical assistants from entities approved by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies:
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists
National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Health career Association
Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) from the National Health career Association
To be qualified to obtain one of the above certifications, you must have graduated high school or obtained your GED, complete an accredited medical assistant program, pass your exam within 1
year, and continued education to keep your certification active. Each certification may vary depending on which exam you decide to obtain.
Medical assisting is not typically a state-licensed/certified profession. This means that medical assistants do not typically need specific credentials to practice in the field. This only include medical assistants
who perform specific duties, such as phlebotomy or x-rays, as state laws may require specific training and certification in these areas.
Medical assistants in Indiana are
not required to possess a certification, registration, or license to work as a medical assistant. While the state does not require a license or certification, you may need to obtain certification to get a job as a medical assistant or to get a promotion in medical assisting.
In the state of Indiana
, Medical Assistants are allowed to perform
administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.
According to 25-22.5-1-2, Section 2(a) of the Indiana statutes, the provisions relating to the unlawful or unauthorized practice of medicine or osteopathic medicine shall not apply to: (20) an
employee of a physician or group of physicians who performs an act, a duty, or a function that is customarily within the specific area of practice of the employing physician or group of
physicians, if the act, duty or function is performed under the direction and supervision of the employing physician or a physician of the employing group within whose area of practice the act, duty or function falls.
