1. Why are learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder hard to separate? Distinguishing between ADHD and learning disabilities can be difficult because of overlapping symptoms and because some behaviors that may result from learning disabilities can look like ADHD symptoms. 2. What might Mr. Martens have done to make the transition to middle school less traumatic? Going over a schedule or some of the different classes she may be taking and some tricks that could help her out. Going over things such as lockers and how to use the combination to get in. 3. How are Shannon’s father’s remarks revealing in this case? He seems to be really understanding and wants to help his daughter out. He doesn't jump to conclusions on what could be wrong with Shannon. He is willing to meet with the school and find ways to help Shannon out. Shannon's father doesn't put the blame on himself or anyone in this case he just focuses on helping shannon. 4. What about medication for Shannon? Do you think she would have been able to be successful in school without medicine? Was it appropriate for the teacher to introduce the idea of medication? I think that it would be a good option for Shannon to take medication. Without the use of medication, I feel she would have really struggled with learning and fitting in, especially as time would be getting harder as she moved on through schooling. As for the teacher introducing the idea of medication, I am two sided on this. I feel that the teacher had Shannons best interest in mind when mentioning it yet it's also slightly inappropriate to mention it. What characteristics did Mrs. Morgan see in Shannon that led her to think she might be a student with ADHD? She noticed how easily Shannon would get distracted. She noticed how she would be disorganized and forget things which could also be a sign of ADHD and not a learning disability. 5. How might home and school have worked together during first and second grade when Shannon was struggling?
The ability to go to school and home between the two would have created a different environment that could have maybe helped Shannon adjust to learning. Also going home could have created a more comfortable environment for her that could have maybe helped keep her focus. With her also still attending school it could have helped her adapt to that environment slowly working her into being more comfortable but not putting too much on her plate at once. 6. Where do you foresee Shannon after middle school? Do you think she will go to college and work in TV? I think Shannon will be able to do whatever she wants in the future. Whether she decides to go to college and work in TV is up to her. I believe she will be able to do whatever she sets her mind to.
