Weekly Assignment Instructions and Answer Sheet
Watch the following YouTube video about velopharyngeal closure (i.e., the closure that occurs between
the soft palate/velum and the walls of the pharynx):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yNteEHeoO8&t=2s&ab_channel=LEADERSproject
Answer the following questions as you watch the video:
1)
What is the muscle needed in order for the velum to move up?
The
levator veli palatini is needed in order for the velum to move up.
2)
What muscle is involved in the squeezing inward of the pharyngeal wall?
The muscle involved in the squeezing inward of the pharyngeal wall is the superior pharyngeal
constrictor muscle.
3)
What function does the tensor veli palatini help with?
This muscle is responsible for the opening and closing of the eustachian tubes for middle ear
drainage.
4)
What movement will a child with a cleft of the soft palate not be able to perform? Why?
A child with a cleft of the soft palate may not be able to perform the movement of
velopharyngeal closure during speech. This is because the cleft in the soft palate disrupts the
proper function of the levator veli palatini muscle, which is responsible for moving the velum
(soft part of the palate) upward and back to achieve closure between the oral and nasal cavities.
Without this closure, the child may produce nasal sounds when they should be producing oral
sounds, leading to speech difficulties.
5)
Give examples of sounds that require velopharyngeal closure and sounds that do not.
Some that require velopharyngeal closure: m and n
Some that
don’t
require closure: p,t,k,s
6)
What was the difference described between velopharyngeal insufficiency and velopharyngeal
incompetence?
velopharyngeal insufficiency primarily involves structural problems that hinder closure, while
velopharyngeal incompetency is related to functional issues affecting the movement required for proper
closure.
7)
