Physician Assisted Suicide is a topic that has always interested me and is something that I have always thought about doing more research on. According to Barness, Regnier, Hook, and Mueller, there are a very small number of secular US medical professional societies that hold statements on physician assisted suicide (Barness, et al, 2020). This lack of statement on the matter can be likely attributed to the controversial nature of physician assisted suicide, and the fact that overtly supporting the matter can often lead to negative societal outcomes. Often times, the statements regarding physician assisted suicide oppose the act because the nature of assisting suicide contradicts the overall purpose of a physician in the first place (Barsness, et al., 2020). Physician assisted suicide has been a topic of controversy for quite some time now, however, physician assisted suicide matters now because the conversation about choosing when to die is prevalent in society. In an article by Lee, Price, Rayner, and Hotopf they stated that often times, there is belief that the approval of physician assisted suicide can be linked to a lack of religious identity in individuals (Lee, et al., 2009). However, religion may not have anything to do with physician assisted suicide, and more to do with the fact that individuals feel they deserve free will. In the past as well as the present, it seems there is a divide over the concept of physician assisted suicide, and whether or not it is ethical. One of the big areas of conflict or disagreement among the opinions is that physician assisted suicide is that is creates errors in judgement or morality within physicians and that physicians are actually supposed to heal people and care for people not kill them (Barsness, et al., 2020). Physician assisted suicide has a lot of statements of neutrality from doctors that have been surveyed on their stance, and this is likely attributed to the fact that they don’t appose it but outward support would create backlash. Possible questions: 1. Is physician assisted suicide ethical in practice? 2. Do individuals have the right to die or the right to physician assisted suicide under certain terminal circumstances? 3. Would physician assisted suicide legalization create different relationships between doctors and patients? Sources: Lee, W., Price, A., Rayner, L., & Hotopf, M. (2009).
