In the video on open wounds, Chip, a paramedic instructor discusses essential parts
of first aid for different types of wounds. Chip emphasizes the importance of wearing gloves in order to prevent contamination. He continues to discuss how to treat a laceration on an arm by applying direct pressure, using bandaging material, and elevating the affected area to control bleeding. Chip emphasizes having the patient sit down to prevent dizziness. The video continues to discuss the treatment for bruises, with chip suggesting using cold compresses or ice packs to reduce swelling. He also emphasizes the significance of using a barrier between the ice and skin to prevent damage. Chip also recommends simple cleaning with soap and water for abrasions, as well as the application of antibiotic ointment. Lastly, Chip suggests for viewers to monitor wounds for signs of infection, and to call for professional medical help if bleeding persists or if infections develop. The video serves as a valuable resource for administering and understanding first aid for different types of wounds, including practical advice and basic first-aid techniques.
Burns
Scenario 1: First Degree Burn
A woman accidentally touches the hot stove while cooking, resulting in a first-
degree burn on her hand. Her hand appears both red and painful. The first step is to
have the person sit down, remove any jewelry in the way, and run the burn under cool tap water for 10 minutes. It is very important to not burst any blisters that may
have been formed. After, provide a water gel dressing (from a burn kit) over the burn for a cooling effect. If a burn kit is not available, use conventional cling film to cover the wound, making sure the fingers are kept apart. If burns cover more than 5% of the body, call emergency medical services. Scenario 2: Second Degree Burn A man accidentally spills hot coffee on his forearm, resulting in a second-degree burn with blistering and redness. Follow the same protocol of the first-degree burn,
removing jewelry, running the burn under cool water for 10 minutes, and applying water gel dressing if available. Use cling film if a burn kit is not available. Monitor
for signs of shock, and if burn cover more than 1% of the body, call emergency medical services. Scenario 3: Third Degree Burn
A woman is involved in a fire, resulting in a third-degree burn on her leg. The burn
shows signs of charring and extends into deeper tissues. Immediately call emergency services, and while waiting cool the burn under running water for at least 10 minutes. Use specialized water gel dressings or apply cling films, making sure to avoid tight wrapping. Monitor the patient for shock while waiting for emergency services.
