Occupational Therapy for Individuals with Dementia and their Caregivers: Promoting
Health, Wellbeing and Quality of Life
The video I chose to review was occupational therapy for individuals with dementia and their
caregivers. The presentation was conducted by
Gina Tucker-Roghi, OTD, who is an
occupational therapist from the occupational therapy school of health and natural sciences, and
the University of California. Gina discusses how the practice of occupational therapists (OT)
improves the quality of life for dementia patients and their caregivers. Furthermore, dementia is
an impaired ability to remember past events, make decisions, and think correctly (CDC, 2019).
Clinical manifestations of this include getting lost, using unusual words, forgetting old
memories, forgetting family members, and not being able to complete tasks independently
(CDC, 2019). Dementia is not a normal part of aging, however, the majority of dementia patients
are from the elderly population.
Moreover, Gina describes how OTs complete the assessment for
individuals with dementia. They incorporate the occupational profile to understand the
individual's history and experiences. Because some individuals cannot answer open-ended
questions, they often use pictures instead. OTs also look at the performance deficits such as
physical, cognitive, and psychosocial skills. They use all of this to see what remains of the
individual so that they can come up with a plan to keep them engaged. To do this, they often use
the individual's past occupations, so that they can still hold on to that meaning, and give them a
sense of purpose. Overall, the OTs help individuals with dementia and their caregivers to
collaborate in problem-solving that identify solutions through adapting to the environment and
task demands to promote the individual's best ability to function (UW Medicine, 2022). Gina
mentions the Tailored Activity Program (TAP) of 2021, which was a three-phase program that
was delivered and researched in communities with individuals with dementia and caregivers.
First, they check to see what remaining abilities the person has based on their stage of dementia.
Second, they check the person's occupational profuse to give them a tailored activity. Third, they
promote caregivers, education, and support. They found statistical improvements following the
TAP for ADL and IADL performances for the individuals. Furthermore, in recent systematic
reviews, ten articles based on five studies were reviewed. All of the studies included the
assessment before coming up with an activity and caregiver education. The findings suggested
that personally tailored activities for PLWD may improve their quality of life and reduce
neuropsychiatric behaviors, and improve caregiver confidence. In addition, it is important to
make sure that these activities are stage appropriate, meaningful, and relevant. People with
different stages of dementia require different forms of activities because they do not have the
same skills. All in all, individuals with dementia do not have to give up on activities just because
they are impaired they only have to be modified. With the help of OTs and caregivers, these
individuals can still have a sense of purpose in their life.
