PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)
and PEP (
post-exposure prophylaxis)
are revolutionary! Is this true for everyone? Does this mark a complete turnaround in the pandemic (HIV/AIDS)? What is the future of treatment? What is the role of education (please avoid trivial comments like "the more society knows, the less stigma there will be")? "Education" is broad. It could mean public education. Early education. Medical education. Decolonizing education. Dig deep, narrow your focus + support your thoughts to avoid assumptions and generalizations.
PrEP and PEP are revolutionary! Is this true for everyone?
Generally, PrEP is for anyone at increased risk for contracting HIV, including anyone who is
in an ongoing relationship with a person living with HIV, anyone who does not consistently use a condom, and anyone who shares injection drug or hormone equipment.
Does this mark a complete turnaround in the pandemic?
Accordingly, The United States has been in a state of emergency concerning the COVID-19
global pandemic since March 2020. With the country responding to the pandemic for over a year, the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), in collaboration with NASTAD, examines the impact COVID-19 has had on PrEP/PEP and sexual health services, particularly in the South.
Throughout the nation's response to the pandemic, sexual health programs were uniquely impacted.
Much of the sexual health workforce was pulled into COVID-19 detail, causing significant service disruptions.
Sexual health programs implemented harm reduction practices to mitigate COVID-
19 risks when serving clients.
PrEP and PEP programs were impacted across the care continuum, from awareness
to adherence.
Step-by-step explanation
What is the future of treatment?
Accordingly, PEP is effective in preventing HIV infection when it's taken correctly, but it's not
100% effective. PEP can lower the risk of getting HIV infection by more than 80%. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is medicine people at risk for HIV take to prevent getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an oral medication that prevents HIV in people at risk of infection with the virus. PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by up to 99% when taken consistently as prescribed.
What is the role of education?
PrEP is a prevention method used by people who are HIV-negative and at high risk for being exposed to HIV through sexual contact or injection drug use. The role of education is to teach the younger ones to avoid sexual intercourse with anyone. To provide information about HIV's and to it's effect to their health.
