Coding Classification Systems Devynn Bottomley ICD 10 MEDICAL CODING
What are medical coding classification systems? The systems are a set of codes used in patient records to maintain information about health conditions and diseases and as well as used in medical billing purposes. The classification systems are used in areas of medicine, public health, and medical information including hospitals and other healthcare facilities, government health programs, private health insurance companies, worker’s compensation, software developers, and libraries. Each area has their own way of incorporating the medical coding classification system into their line of work. As of right now, there are five main classification systems used which include from newest to oldest, ICD-11, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10- PCS, CPT, AND HCPCS Level II. The two most used are the ICD-10 and the CPT. ICD-10 codes are alphanumeric and used for a diagnosis, to describe symptoms, and causes of death in all humans. The World Health Organization is the responsible party for the development, monitoring, and copyright of this classification system. Three other organizations help evaluate all changes and modifications to these codes. What does ICD-10-CM stand for and what is its purpose? ICD-10-CM is abbreviated for International Classification of Diseases, 10 th Revision, Clinical Modification. This coding system uses special three-to-seven-digit alphanumeric codes that can be used for reporting, morbidity statistics, and billing purposes. This system also helps define diseases and allocates resources to provide care. There are over 68,000 codes that are used to interpret diseases of body systems like the digestive system, respiratory system, nervous system, infectious and parasitic diseases, malformations that are congenital, and neoplasms (tumors benign or cancerous). This version of ICD-10-CM replaced ICD-9-CM and there is an 11th revision in process. This classification system can be used in combination with the CPT codes. Now you are probably wondering what I mean by CPT codes. The American Medical Association published the CPT, which means Current Procedural Terminology, they meet three times a year to review and discuss any new or upcoming technology issues that could cause problems with any procedure or how it already related to a code. These codes can be used for claims processing and developing guidelines for review
