Jenny Magana AHS 375 January 25, 2024 Prompt: Identify and describe three or four values important to your personal identity and how they may relate to your professional identity. Distinguishing law from ethics can be challenging. However, an effective healthcare provider can integrate both in decision making. Legal advancements, such as HIPAA, are enforced by the government but complement ethical values that shape patient experiences. As a pre-dental student, my values include humility, preparedness, and resilience. Despite one having years of healthcare experience, a professional always has something new to learn. Whether it's reading updated journals, using new technology, or improving clinical practices, a doctor should always be open to receiving criticism. In doctors that have had many years of practice, humility can prevent overconfidence and enable an open mind with patient diagnosis. Additionally, preparedness is a value that translates into my everyday life and allows me to respond quickly to unforeseen challenges. Clinically, being prepared creates a sense of efficiency that allows patients to feel that their time is valued. When urging patients to take time off work or find childcare, they too need to feel that their time is respected. I have seen a drastic change in environment and patient-doctor interaction in dental clinics that are efficient versus others that keep patients waiting. Lastly, when being a student, having resilience allows me to bounce back from rejection and try again. Clinically, there is no doubt that I will receive patients that don’t want to follow my medical advice, will come when their oral health is at its worst, and wait until the last possible minute to use insurance benefits. Nonetheless, I need to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to every patient I encounter, demonstrating resilience in preserving their oral health. Overall, I want to use these values in my professional career to create trusting doctor- patient relationships that encourage patients to take initiative in improving their oral health independently.
