Jackson Weber VSIM Reflection
In this simulation we are presented with Jackson Weber, a 5-year-old male who was brought to the emergency department by his parent after experiencing four seizures at home within a 12-hour period. Upon entering the patients room the first thing I immediately did was ensure all seizure precautions have been met. As a nurse, it is crucial to be aware of these precautions to provide safe and effective care as seizures can cause patients to fall or injure themselves further. Some of these precautions include ensuring bed railings are padded, removing all potentially hazardous items, as well as ensuring suction and oxygen equipment are readily available. During my assessment of the patient, they began to have a seizure. I did not have the opportunity to observe or care for any patients with seizures during my clinical experiences, so this assignment was a great way to test and put my knowledge to use. Seizures can be a frightening experience for both the patient and those around them. During Jackson’s seizure I made sure to stay calm, reassure the patient, protect him from injury, record the duration of the episode, and stay with him. After he had fully recovered from the seizure, I assisted Jackson into a recovery position. This can help avoid aspiration and airway obstruction in a postictal state. As part of my orders, I also placed a nasal cannula on the patient and turned the oxygen on to 2 liters. After assessing the patient and checking his vitals, I called the provider
with an updated SBAR to discuss the patient’s condition and await further instruction.
